Body Modification Body modification, some have probably heard of this term and some probably have no idea what this is. Body modification is when someone willingly alters their physical appearance. Most people apply this definition to those of us that are tattooed and pierced. In reality body modification has taken part among races, class and history. What is not associated with modification is what you see every day, the body builder and the people who have had plastic surgery done. Modifications are done purely out of aesthetic reason, but for some cultures it is done to represent a rite of passage, social status, or group affiliations. Piercing as a recent trend is a misconception. Ear piercing however, is incredibly common in almost every culture in history. Nose piercings date back as far as 4,000 years documented in the Middle East and is still being continued in India. Both types are even mentioned in the bible. And of course we’ve all seen then lip discs in certain African tribes. Today most people practice piercings with mostly aesthetic reasoning. Tattooing is believed to have originated 10,000 years ago. There is documented proof of tattooing on Egyptian mummies and on Otzi, the ice man discovered in 1991. The methods and tools used in tattooing have changed over the years, but the choice behind getting one is still fashion or to make a statement. Because tattoos used to be used to identify criminals or “undesirables” in the community, that brand is still thought of by many. However, with the increasing popularity tattoos are becoming very common and are being accepted more as the norm. Other types of body modifications that aren’t as popular are scarification and branding. These are much more painful and uncomfortable than tattooing but produce beautiful arts of work.
