Parents, Take Control If a parent had to go as far as to put a monitoring application on his or her child’s phone, it’s my belief that they have already failed as a parent. Parents should instill good values into their children, and let them know what’s right from wrong. Adults have experienced many things throughout their lives which can have a positive influence on their children if they share those experiences with them. In “Blame Parents, Not Kids, for Sexting”, Leonard Sax talks about how parents are to blame for their children sexting, and that there should be monitoring software installed on their phones to prevent it. The installation of the software application gives a parent an idea of what she or she could do to have more control. It would allow for parents to contact their child before they send the picture so they can address it. If the parents inform the child about the app it can also cause the child to choose what they send more carefully. In the article it gives an example of how the scare tactic of the app will keep children in check. It says “she could have explained to Justin that her parents could see all of her pictures, and that any such photo would result in her losing her phone for a month or longer” (para 9). This is a real possible scenario that shows fear controlling their child’s wrong doing. The app will make them think twice before they are involved in sexting. Sax brings fourth some good suggestion the throughout the article. I have to side with idea of parents being more involved with their children’s social life. This can be done by “watching what their children do online, and paying attention” (para 11). I agree with Sax’s idea that parent should take initiative but they can only guide their children so
