In addition to the characteristics that are protected under the discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation and age by recognising and understanding that everyone has the right to be treated as a individual and encouraging individuals to express their individuality freely if they wish everyone who is cared for in your setting will feel valued as a individual. The equality act 2010 is an act which ensures that all individuals are protected from various forms of discrimination in the work place. This may include indirect, direct and covert forms of discriminations as well as harassment and bullying against vulnerable individuals. This act focuses on many important laws and legislations put in place to avoid unfair treatment of those in the ‘protected characteristics’ group, as well as giving individuals greater protection from harassment they do not want. Furthermore, this act aims to give make it easier for employers to understand their responsibilities. This is perhaps what makes it such as simple act to follow as it uses clearly set out and precise laws which fully explain every right that an individual holds in their workplace, this might also be a reason why it stands so strong compared to other acts of legislation; due to its importance and value.
The meaning of the word equality is that all individuals have the same value but it still doesn't mean that they all should be treated in the same way. This principle is basically asserting that fundamental liberties come first over anything concerning justice. Every person is entitled to equal basic liberties that should be exercised. These liberties include: political liberty (right to vote, public office, etc. ), freedom of speech and assembly, the liberty of conscience, freedom of thought, freedom to hold and own property, and freedom from arbitrary or unjust arrests. To allow human beings to be human, meaning the capability of humans to choose what they do and do not do and strive for whatever personal endeavors they aspire for, necessitates that the fundamental liberties be protected and held equal.
