Stephen T. Sprung Mr. Saluga English 12 25 March 2013 Beowulf & Michael Westen: Two Great Heroes There are modern day heroes, and heroes from the olden days. Beowulf is a hero from when the days were much, much simpler. Michael Westen is a TV character, but in his show “Burn Notice” he is a modern day hero. Beowulf and Michael Westen both have great backgrounds, similar hero characteristics, and they are different. After being blacklisted or “burned” during a mission, Michael Westen was returned to his hometown of Miami, Florida. When you are burned, your life is at stake. Your bank accounts are frozen and you are blacklisted from every government list known to man. His burn notice wasn’t the work of one person; it was the work of a secret organization that used burned spies to carry out their illegal missions. He is a hero because he helps people with serious matters that the police can’t get involved in. He risks everything, but gets the job done. He enlisted the help of his three friends Fiona, Sam, and Jesse. They always have his back, no matter what situation it is. In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats in Scandinavia, comes to the help of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and is then also destroyed. After he wins, Beowulf goes home to Geatland in Sweden and later becomes king of the Geats. After a period of fifty years has passed, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is fatally hit during the battle. After his death, his friends bury him in a nice burial plot in Geatland. He is a hero because he put himself in danger to help those who needed his help. He also killed Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. He was legendary for his travels and adventures.
