Drake Propson English 11 Mr. Hoffman 9/15/14 Beowulf: an Epic Hero Throughout the story you can see that Beowulf is an epic hero when he fights Grendel, his mother, and the dragon. These fights show how Beowulf is an epic hero. Beowulf is an epic hero because he has superhuman strength, intelligence, and courage, and performs brave deeds, and risks death for the greater good of society. In the fight against Grendel, Beowulf’s superhuman strength allows him to beat and mortally wound Grendel, and his courage shows when he beats Grendel by using only his bare hands. The characteristics of superhuman strength and courage are seen throughout the story of Beowulf and define why he is an epic hero. Beowulf gets these characteristics because the people want to show that only Beowulf could be the only one to defeat Grendel because everyone else who tried failed and got killed. Beowulf is an epic hero because he performs brave deeds. We can see this in the scene after he fights Grendel. Even though that is all that he planned on doing he stayed and went to go find Grendel’s mother and kill her since she was in distraught of her only son dying, and she took Hrothgar’s friend. We can see this as a characteristic of an epic hero because now Beowulf is the king of his people and is very old. The fact that he is super old says that he is truly risking death. Now Beowulf takes himself and eleven other men with him to the dragon tower. He goes in all by himself to fight this dragon. He finds the dragons treasure and then wham the battle is off. Even though Beowulf wins he is fatally wounded. This last fight truly shows how he risks death for the greater good of
