BECOMING A K-POP FAN The one I interviewed is a 20-year-old girl who has been a crazy K-pop fan for 10 years. Her very first perception of Korean entertainment was the drama Successful Story Of a Bright Girl (2003). She knew nothing about Korean drama before. "My mother watched it on TVB. She found it very interesting so she invited me to watch with her. We both thought that the main actor of it was so handsome and he acted so good so that we kept talking about him." "At that time, I simply appreciated the quality of Korean drama. The story plot, performance of actors were far better than that in Hong Kong!" She later realized that, the appreciation of Korean drama actually cultivated her a interest in K-pop. By then, she started putting attention on specific idol stars and singers. By 2004, more Korean dramas were shown in TVB. Stairway to Heaven, Full House were extremely popular and they raise her awareness of Korean pop. Watching more dramas, she found a greater interest in Korean idols. Although they were not as popular as nowadays, she still found her way to keep track with their news. A few months later, she discovered a charming boy band TVXQ ( a band of SM Entertainment of 5 members) and being attracted. "I couldn't know anything about TVXQ by reading local newspaper. In order to keep myself updated, I searched for their news from Korean websites." She admitted that she could not understand Korean news content, but she still looked at the pictures occasionally to guess what happened with them. A magic happened when she promoted to secondary school. "The very first day I went to school, I found that the girl sitting next to me had the same mobile wallpaper with me. I knew from that she was also a fan of TVXQ! I excitedly tell her about this and she reacted as happy as me. We became friends immediately and kept talking about TVXQ after that. "
