February 2, 2008 was our biggest most consequential game of the year, for our varsity school soccer team. The year could be described by some as a year of rebuilding and upset after upset. Yet to many of us it was a year of growing and building of friendship. The match that was lurking closer and closer was against Sunnyside High School who we had previously defeated in a nail-bitter style game. Nevertheless we knew not to underestimate them for they were currently ranked 2nd in this vast sate, that encompassed many commendable and worthy teams.
He was passed over for the final spot on the varsity team.” He took that as motivation and dominated on the junior varsity team. The next year he made the varsity team and led them to the state playoff his senior year. Accepting a scholarship for North Carolina, Jordan started as a freshman. He hit a game winning shot in the championship game that made him part of college history. He was named player of the year after his great performance his junior year.
Especially for the past the two seasons, the Cavs were picked to at least get to the Finals. However, they fell short. Much of that responsibility has to be placed on their franchise player—LeBron. Although, it is easy to point the finger at the head coach, Mike Brown or the supporting cast, the fact is that the Cavs finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference the past two seasons—that doesn't happen with bad coaching and a poor supporting cast. At the end of the day, the best player is Kobe Bryant because he lead his team through the good and bad, and he helped lead the Lakers grab their 16th title against Boston.
Champions At Last The Los Angeles Kings had the greatest Stanley Cup Championship run in the history of the National Hockey League. During the 2011-2012 season the Los Angeles Kings were an up and coming team with bright and young athletes. Anemic scoring and inconsistent play lead to the mid-season firing of Head Coach Terry Murray and the hiring of Darryl Sutter. Under the coaching of the brash personality of Darryl Sutter the Kings played a gritty and overpowering game; the playoff push was ignited. The Kings finished the regular season as the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference and finished the post-season as Stanley Cup Champions for the first time in franchise history.
All he said after this match was “A W is a W.” After this he was headed to St.Louis for the NCAA Championships. He wrestled his way to the final match against rival Wes Hand once again. He ended up beating him in double overtime and said that a big weight was lifted off him. (Rippel 60) His record at Minnesota was 55-3. After this he had a few different career choices to pick from.
These two Super Bowls were so similar that it was almost frightening for some. Both Super Bowls starred the same coach-quarterback tandems as before. The Giants had Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin, and the Patriots had Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Both Patriot teams had a strong motivation to win; ’07 featured the opportunity to be considered the greatest of all-time, and the 2011 Pats dedicated this past season to Myra Kraft, Team Owner Robert Kraft’s wife, who died of cancer just before the start of the season. The Giants came out on top after overtime games in the NFC Championship both years.
Prof. Sirkin English 1A 19 April 2010 Words: 1200 The Bumpy Road Towards Successful Michael Jordan was probably one of the most competitive players that ever existed in the NBA. He was always the go to player at the most crucial times during tight basketball games. Jordan was entrusted with game winning shots on more than one occasion and he missed twenty six of them. Jordan played every game as if it was his last, and took every loss personally. By playing with the mentality that every game was his last, he played each game with no regrets.
He is a visionary leader because he took a UCLA team that had a losing record and transformed them into conference champions in his first year as head coach. This took a lot of innovative techniques to turn the team around and put them on the track for success. In relation to Wooden’s pyramid
Coach K at last led Duke to victory in 1991, winning their first national championship. Once again in the year 1992, Duke won the national title, and maintained the national number one ranking throughout the season, this time by 20 points. Shortly after the tournament, Coach K. was forced to take a ten-month break from coaching because he underwent back surgery, but he returned to lead the Blue Devils into three more NCAA tournaments in 1996, '97 and '99.
The battle of Thermopylae, in 480BC, is possibly one of the most remember battles of all time. Despite being a defeat, the Spartans held off the Persian army of Xerxes for two days until their position was out flanked by the secret trail, in the face of insurmountable odds and with the knowledge of a victory being rather improbable, the Spartans and their allies show bravery and courage, which Herodotus in his accounts emphasises. The battle of Thermopylae becomes a moral victory through which all further examples are measured by. Throughout Herodotus’ account of the battle, an emphasis seems to be placed on the Spartan ethos. The scout of the Persians that had been sent to the pass at the Persisn’s arrival at Thermopylae reports the Lacedaemonians were “..exercising naked and combing their hair..” (Herodotus 7.208) The Great King, confused and seeing the Lecedaemonian’s behaviour as laughable, calls on the exiled Spartan King, Demaratus, for an explanation.
