”Away in Airdrie” is a short story by James Kelman. It’s situated in Scotland and deals with football, apart from other aspects. Danny, who is the main character, is going to Airdrie along with his uncle Archie to watch Glasgow Rangers play at Broomfield Park. “Away in Airdrie” takes place in Scotland. It’s a home-away-home story as Danny is at home in the begging then he is away to watch the football game and in the end of the story he is on his way back home again. In this short story is Danny the narrator and we are reading the text from his point of view. He is a Teenager who plays soccer for the local school team. The main theme is the growing-up part, where Danny starts being the boy who takes to the football game with his uncle and turns into a boy who can take responsibility for him self even when the uncle is irresponsible. Another theme is to have a role model and reject them. In the beginning Danny looks up to his uncle Archie and wants to watch the game with him. The symbols in the text are proving Danny’s respect for Archie. The first one is when he is talking about the trousers. He wanted a pair just like Archie’s, but instead he had to wear long non-wide trousers. Through the story Danny loses his respect for Archie, which is also shown by a symbol. Uncle Archie smokes and so did Danny, but when Danny was on his way home, he tossed the cigarette pack down on the ground and threw them out of the window. The message in the text is that it’s not easy growing up. You can set the term of growing up in perspective with a rollercoaster: “sometimes it goes up, and sometimes it goes down.” In this text Danny experience his role model turn into an irresponsibly alcoholic.
