Catrinna Pryor English Comp II March 31, 2013 Professor Babcock Charter Schools In 1991, the first charter school was created in the state of Minnesota. By 1995, nineteen states had passed laws that allowed for the creation of charter schools. By 2003, that number had increased to 40 states (www.pbs.org/closingtheachievementgap/faq.html). A study conducted by the Center for Education Reform revealed that the number of charter schools in the United States had grown from 1,651 in 2000 to 5,741 in 2011 (http://www.edreform.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/National-Charter-School-Enrollment-Statistics-2011-12.pdf). With so many public schools reporting failing scores each year, it is no wonder why so many parents opt to remove their children from the regular public school system and place them in public schools. However, as appealing as charter schools may seem, they are not always the best solution. Charter school systems have caused harm to public school systems in that they provide some students with an unfair advantage over others, compete with local school districts for federal and state funds, and offer little to no accountability.…show more content…
To some extent, charter schools widen the achievement gap between privileged and unprivileged children by sometimes pulling the best and brightest students from the public school system. Charter schools offer parents a choice of whether or not to allow their children to attend schools for which they are zoned. This choice not only limits the number of students who can attend charter schools, but it also limits who can attend the charter schools.
