Gun Control One of the hot issues during election season is the Second Amendment, which is the right to bear arms. Lawmakers, citizens, and gun lobbyists have been arguing over gun control for over a century. Just in the past two years this issue has made it to the nation’s highest court. In the ruled in a 5-4 decision that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a gun for traditionally lawful purposes like personal defense inside a home. The Supreme Court ruled that the right to bear arms applies to the to the local and state level. This lifted a gun ban that was around for almost 30 years in Chicago. This decision didn’t determine what kind of gun laws could be applied. The Senate is currently discussing and is in favor of expanding background checks. In the United States, there are over 300 million guns in circulation and this does not take into account the illegal production of guns. The opponents of these laws say that Americans have the right to bear arms. They believe that the laws would stop individuals from defending their property of themselves. The significant disagreement that opponents argue is that the right to use and own weapons is a personal freedom promised by the Constitution. Individuals against gun control also think that certain people should not be allowed to own guns but also think that stricter laws can stop the needless loss of life. The debate over gun control has been one a main topic since the 20th century. Ownership of guns and gun control laws can have startling consequences.
