Peter Townsend is a Sociologist and is one of the founders of CPAS’s, in 1979 Townsend defined poverty as people and families who lack basic things in life such as food and types of diet, not good living conditions and facilities. In the UK poverty it is caused by a range of factors which work together and result in inadequate resources. We examined how people perceive child poverty and how growing up in poverty affects children. It also addresses some of the underlying causes of child poverty. Findings • More children experience poverty than previously thought.
In the article “Just whom is this Divorce good for? By Marquart she explains, “We found that children of so- called “good” divorces often do worse even than children of unhappy low- conflict marriages. They say more often, that family life was stressful and they had to grow up to soon. They are themselves more likely to divorce and children of divorce feel like divided selves”. I would have to agree with that because I am actually going through my parents getting a divorce and when I found out I didn’t want to believe it at all I didn’t want to see my parents split up it just wasn’t right to me.
32,500 children have been neglected in 2010, and in Ingham County 42 percent of children have been abused or neglected (milhs.org). In Ingham County, 8.5 children of every 1000 are in out of home care, referring to foster homes, etc (milhs.org). Unemployment rates and low income is affecting the youth and children in terrible ways. The problem for the population of women is the lack of intervention and treatment in the urban and rural community. There are multiple reasons for post-partum depression in women in rural and urban communities that vary from socioeconomics, anxiety, and lack of social support. Post-partum depression can also have effects on the children such as malnutrition, illness, developmental delay, poor growth, and poor mother-infant attachment. There have been many post-partum depression screenings and surveys done worldwide and most of the population is Caucasian, married women of high socioeconomic status, however, there is evidence to suggest that in urban and rural communities worldwide there is not enough intervention and treatment. “In a Chinese study, rural women had more depressive disorders as well as a group of women in a rural part in Mexico experienced higher rates of depressive disorders in women.” (Villegas, 2011) Many times rural residents are associated with low-income, low levels of education, lack of insurance, and poor quality of life which can contribute to the onset of psychiatric illness.
Vulnerable mothers that do not finish getting their education become discouraged and loose the motivation and drive to tackle the oncoming challenges that life brings, creating for them another barrier on the micro level; it being a financial barrier. “Poverty and economic loss diminish the capacity for supportive, consistent, and involved parenting and render parents more vulnerable to the debilitating effects of negative life events” (Vonnie C. McLoyd, 1990 p.311). Not being financially stable brings on a lot of stress that impacts the relationship between the mother and child. Education has a large impact on a person’s life and it can change it for the better.
The affects of lead-based paint on children is a serious issue that is affecting millions of families each year. Because of the presence of lead-based paint in lower income housing, research is finding that among all children between the ages of 0 and 6 living in poverty are being hit the hardest (Jacobs et al, 2002). Of this group, the largest minority population affected is that of the non-Hispanic black population (“Child Trends”, 2003). It is estimated that 55% of all black children living in poverty have elevated levels of lead in their blood (Dugbatey et al, 2005). There has been legislature passed to prevent lead from invading our communities, but still there is a serious problem at hand.
Ethnicity has repeatedly been shown to be a strong indicator of health status. Deprivation, socioeconomic factors such as income, education and unemployment, is recognised as a major indicator of health. These are demographic characteristics that will influence services, for example if a local community have a particularly high number of older people then residential homes and nursing homes are going to be more important that than services for children like nurseries and playgroups. I have chosen to look at teenage pregnancies and child poverty in Norfolk. Child Poverty Many children and young people in Norfolk face a variety of disadvantages that mean they are less likely to have positive outcomes for their lives.
‘The Cause and Effect of Poverty in the UK’ Poverty People don’t always understand the causes and effects of this so called ‘poverty’ so that’s why I’m going to explain it. A simple definition of poverty would be; “The state of being extremely poor/ the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount.” Poverty is often highlighted as humans not been able to obtain compulsory features of life such health care, education and in some cases, the essential needs such as water, warmth and shelter. Millions and millions of people, as well as children, face these problems on a daily basis in the UK. Just to get an exact number of these ‘millions’, a study said 2.2 million children and two million working age adults were living in absolute poverty in 2009-10! Causes and effects of Poverty A starting point for causing poverty can be as simple as early age pregnancies.
According surveys, I think high unemployment rate and low employment rate, mental illness and domestic violence can cause people becoming homeless in America. Poverty is closely linked to homeless. Poverty due to high employment rate and low employment rate can trap individuals and can lead to homelessness. Although the United States is recovering from the worst financial crisis in 2008 since the Great Depression, there are still many homeless people suffering from the crisis. Many homeless people who have jobs and can't avoid homelessness, escaping homelessness is virtually impossible for those without a job.
In society today poverty is measured to ways either absolute poverty, or relative poverty. Lets start with Absolute poverty, Absolute poverty measures the number of people living below a certain income threshold or the number of households unable to afford certain basic goods and services like food water and shelter. This is the level of poverty you most likely picture when you hear the word poverty. Usually commercials of foreign children, with bloated bellies who suffer from malnutrition and lack of clean water. Absolut poverty is mostly prevalent in developing countries like India or Haiti, but the United States is not immune from it.
