Richard encounters many changes throughout the book such as going to new places and accepting the fact that he’s gay. The theme of this book can be related to my current disposition as a college student. As a freshman, there are many new beginnings which lead to the concept of change which I try to avoid because I’m scared of the unknown and many misunderstandings that may come with it. Reading this book gave me the confidence to overcome the obstacles that a college student might face along the way. My view on change relates to Richard’s in “The Prince of Los Cocuyus” because we both faced being misunderstood, new beginnings, changes in surroundings, trying to fit in and pursuing dreams.
Individual Assignment Three: My Experience at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Introduction In this paper you will read about my visit to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. I will describe my overall impression, the hardest part of visiting and what surprised me the most. I will also discuss the biggest lesson I learned, how this assignment related to class and if I would recommend this assignment for future classes. My Experience General Impressions I have visited the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center before and drove past it several times. Although I didn’t recall much from my previous visit because I was so young, so this really felt like my first time.
Cindy Belony Reflection on Diversity Devry University SOCS 350N0 August 12, 2012 There were several times in my youth, where I felt excluded or invisible from other people. The time I remember most was in my high school year trying to fit in with the other students. I was just trying to find my own identity and relate to others. In my first and second year of high school, I was in an Esol program, even though I was born here in America. I had a good time in the Esol program.
I would like to fo more research on my families Native American history. Coming to Husson University was a major change in my life. I still haven’t got used to the system yet. There are a lot more cultures and religions here than there are at home. I met a few exchange students and they told me some of their stories about the differences between their home country and America.
I didn’t realize this book went over so much different things, like how the Ku Klux Klan got started, and Drug dealers living with their parents, I would recommend this book for everyone to read it was very interesting to me. I didn’t realize Macroeconomics would fall into this. One thing that I didn’t know was that teachers would cheat to get there grades up to get a better bonus; I guess I just came from a small school. I would have to agree with the Author of this book, that there is so much stuff that goes on in this world that we don’t think about. We stay in our own little community, and not think what is going on outside of it as long as we are happy and safe.
It was new to me and little overwhelming. I believe that was a result of my lack of exposure to diversity growing up. If I was exposed to the different types of people and things when I was younger, it would not have shocked me as much. It would have prepared me for working with different groups of people while I was in college. My college made sure that the students were exposed to many different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs by requiring students to attend 24 cultural events before graduation.
If students understand this they will be able to understand the history and the value of autobiographies and memoirs. Memoirs are pieces of writing that can be fairly new to college students, but most of the time students do not realize that some pieces are labeled memoirs. Memoirs are more thought about as autobiographies to students. “Instead of telling about the entire life of a person, the memoir tells only about a certain period of time or about a certain story arc of the author's life.” This can help by just focusing on a certain period of history and offer more insight, it would focus more on the period and not just fully someone’s life. This helps us to really look at history and what it is and can see how it shapes our lives and our surroundings.
For example, many of us weren’t really use to studying during high school, mainly because it was so unchallenging. But through college you are going to have to make some changes in your life. You are going to take those classes that require memorizing long formulas and theories, and that will take more of your time. During the process of college you are going to have to learn how to take care of yourself regardless of your parent’s being there for you or not. Responsibility will play a big role during this time of your life.
That was a big step being independent on my own not being with my parents all the time. I had to things for myself, but if had question about anything to just ask them. My parent’s life experiences helped and accumulated wisdom preparing me to meet the requirements of life in society. Peer groups in society today have a lot of violence, drugs, and other bad things. My high school I graduated from Washington Marion High School has changed in many
