I want this to be on a personal level to each person I meet. I believe that if you really got to know my heart, my serving and selfless heart, hopefully “good” might be an understatement. However, if you catch me on a bad day, good might be completely erased from your mind. Although there is a lot of good to me, I am human. One thing you would able to see is that I get stressed very easily.
Often to amateur writers, the process of writing seems like a chore; a mountain of words to sieve through before they can create a comprehensible wall of text. Lamott uses witty lines and anecdotes from famous writers to show that everyone faces the same problem and provides a simple enough solution. In my mind at least, this short piece has enabled me to look at essays in a different manner. That it’s alright to make mistakes and your first draft can be like throwing poop at a blank canvas; you can always clean it up later. In persuading her readers, Lamott uses ethos, logos and pathos to great effect.
Thin Slicing Life In the novel “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell, thin slicing is used as a tool in life to make “snap-decisions” from one’s unconscious state of mind. This can be more effective rather than a complex thought process. In the classroom is where I feel I come in contact with thin slicing the most. When a difficult or random question is asked, occasionally I would get an answer right away but I wouldn’t think it was right. In that situation I would find out that my answer was actually correct.
Quiz 5: Schwartz, “Paradox of Choice” UC 175::Summer 2014 1. Summarize Schwartz’s argument by briefly defining the concept of the “paradox of choice.” Barry Schwartz talks about how our choices has made us not happier then we should be, just more satisfied. Us as human beings have come to accept just being satisfied in not happy. We’ve come vulnerable to dissatisfaction. Dissatisfaction does nothing but dig us in an even bigger whole where we have to take more of a responsibility.
I considered a good writer to be anyone who could effectively convey a message to a reader. Since going through the first two units, I have learned that good writing is quite a bit more complicated. Author Keith Grant-Davie discussed how important to good writing it was to analyze your subject matter to understand who all of your possible audiences are and who you may be representing when writing your material, and to address all parties appropriately. If an author can do this effectively, I believe that it is a crucial part of becoming a good writer. Unit one also taught me to reevaluate how important certain priorities when it came to writing.
The way you tell someone to do something, may be ok to one person, but it could be offensive, or threatening to another. When you offend that person, it is then when you have to be the bigger person and fix things. If not, the work place will not be very comfortable to work in for the both of you and it could effect the people around you, too. Another example in this area would be how you spend your time. Time management is very important in all aspects of life.
Too many people use corruption to do things that benefit themselves. The world would be a better place if everyone were treated fairly. Encouragement is very important because no matter who you are, sooner or later you will need someone to encourage you. Life can be tough at times. How people look can sometimes be misleading.
We have found ourselves at times to be guilty of the negatives that come with functional organization. We’ve spent so much time focusing on our particular function, that it’s harder for us to understand the goals of our co-worker’s functions, and would just write them off as not being a qualified employee because they don’t understand our particular function at work. This can help us take a step back and further analyze our organization’s structure and what we can do differently to help understand it better and contribute better to the organization’s overall
A good example of this is at work if there is a situation at work and you have to resolve it this person looks into different points of view and will do what it’s best for both. It’s a very fair person. They want everybody’s satisfaction. The weakness of being under Result Lens is that you need to learn to reflect on your actions, because if you don’t learn it you will fail in your decisions and your life. People under Result Lens tend to be possessive and sometimes this characteristic drives people away.
