I know a lot of words; I just don’t use them in my everyday conversation, thus making it more difficult to incorporate in my essay. The other parts I was dissatisfied with were my introduction and conclusion. After the revision of my paper I noticed they needed tremendous work. Starting an assignment is always the hardest step for me .Like in the very beginning, when you are digging for words to tie your point together; it’s always a struggle building that creative momentum. I believe the point Peter is trying to make is if we can just let go and “be yourself” in a sense, then the words will flow more naturally. When we turn off all the “interruption, changes and hesitations between the consciousness and the page” or let go of self-consciousness, magic happens!
NCLB set forth a certain criteria to be met, but allowed the states to determine how they would accomplish it. Therefore, each state handles assessment and accountability differently. This makes it hard to show success or failure of the programs. Supporters and critics alike can cite research that supports their opinion. My opinion of NCLB is it is flawed, developmentally inappropriate, ill funded, ←and→ leaving more students, teachers, ←and→ schools behind than ever before because The tests have turned into the objective of classroom instruction rather than the measure of teaching ←and→ learning.
Summary/ Response Assignment O`Malley, Patrick. “More Learning, More Testing” In “More Testing, More Learning,” Patrick O`Malley suggests that college professors should give tests to the students periodically in order for the students to learn more. Furthermore, more tests or exams will minimize the student’s stress because students will be more familiar with the subjects that are given to them. Like the author says, “If professors gave an additional brief exams at frequent intervals, student would learn more, study more regularly, worry less, and perform better on midterms, finals, and other papers and projects.” (O`Malley, pg. 488).
I went in, and had todo cognitive testing: an IQ test, a reading test, and a slew of other things that I was just lost in. I felt an unbearable sensation of anxiousness growing with every new task we started. All I could think of was testing and wanting to get out. I questioned why I was even going through all of this effort. Every time I walked out for a break, the tension was eased, and I reminded myself why I was there.
I guess I was blind to see how teachers have to teach and how they teach. Back in my day when I went to school teachers cared and tried to keep the students from not being bored and keep us engaged. Now that both my girls are in school. I think it’s bad for the teachers and the students cause all they have is test after test that last for weeks just to prove where our kids stand with the rest of the nation or in the county. This is considered pathos because it is a great amount of pressure writing a paper and can be very tedious. She wants her audience to feel a sense of liberation, and she also wants her audience to understand that she too knows how it feels to be put under pressure. Another point Alonso uses in pathos is when she supposed “Examinations can indeed deal with trivia, they can be badly conceived and thus can cause needless anxiety in the students who struggle to make sense out of poorly-written or poorly-focused questions”(198). She is saying she wants to show other people that exams are the biggest test a student can take and the struggle students have to face during exam time and or writing a paper for final exams. A final point Alonso speaks is “Most damaging of all, perhaps, is the fact that professors are human beings and therefore they will sometimes grade examinations unfairly” (198).
Orlando Montes EOP ESSAY The most difficult challenge I have had to overcome during my life time was not being able to communicate correctly through the written word being able to transfer thoughts from my mind to a piece of paper might sound like a brainless task to most people. This on the other hand is one of the most difficult things I have to overcome whether if I’m texting my girlfriend, writing something for school, or even posting a status on facebook, that is what I find to be a big challenge. Just knowing where to start so I can move along makes my head hurt and I get distracted too easily. But I’m sure soon enough, God can transform me into person with a clear mind. A personal experience that has made a lasting impression on me has to be when I moved out of my parent’s house.
The conventions of college writing are very complex and if professors are more helpful and patient with first year students as they learn academic discourse, students will be better prepared for all future academic endeavors and they will have a better opportunity to strengthen and develop their voice. David Bartholomae, author of Inventing the University, is a professor who writes about the struggles that students face with transitioning into college level writing and learning to write with authority in academic discourse, all while maintaining a unique voice. Then some students end up learning more than others where learning actually counts because administrators want to get them test ready. Before, teachers taught the subject and sometime throughout the year students took a test without pressure that they would be held back or certain things like that. Teachers are also affected because they actually have to teach two courses. There is a period out of the year where they can only teach about the subjects on the test.
