Osborne Jessica February 24, 2012 Brave New World Huxley’s society in Brave New World is different than our own society in many ways. For example, most men and women desire the opportunity to procreate and have their own children. In Brave New World, all the children are created in an embryo factory. As the children are hatched, they are subjected to preconditioning activities. The activities are based upon the children’s place within the caste of society. Children that belong within the lower caste of society are conditioned by electrical shock to avoid picking up books. When the babies are subjected to in our society, individuals have the ability to move into different levels of society based on their motivation to achieve higher education and better careers. For example, the individuals of the lower class will move no further because of their association of books and electrical shock. Therefore, the individuals do not feel the need to educate themselves any further, and they are happy to remain in their current caste within society. The relationships between men and women in Huxley’s society are quite different than our society. In our society, the majority of men and women have monogamous relationships. In Huxley’s society men and women have relationships with multiple individuals. Both of our societies like to make a spectacle of the unusual instead of trying to understand where the differences lie and come to a common ground. Individuals that do not conform to society standards are made to feel like rejects and most often remove themselves from society by taking solitude away from everyone.
