6.04 WELLVILLE WATER Why We Need Water • Water regulates the temperature of the human body. • Water removes waste from the body. • Water helps breakdown the food that we eat. • Water provides nutrients to cells which allows them to stay alive. • Water is in the blood stream and helps transport oxygen throughout the body. Myths about Water Myth: Water was safer a century ago. Fact: Actually the quality of water hasn’t really changed. The types of pollution are just different. Myth: Drinking extra water leads to weight loss. Fact: Water is a great help to dieters due to the fact that it has no calories but it has no direct correlation to weight loss. Dehydration If you become dehydrated what should you do? • If you start to feel dizzy, go sit in the shade and drink some water. • If you’re in a prolonged activity such as a sporting event, drink a more sugary drink that contains electrolytes that will give you some energy and also rehydrate your body. FUN FACTS • There’s much more fresh water underground than there is on the Earth’s surface. • By the time someone’s thirsty, they’ve already lost about 1% of their total weight in water. • Almost 70% of an adult body’s weight is water. • Drinking too much water, too quickly can lead to water intoxication. • A person can live one month without food but only a week without water.
