One way of looking at ADHD is that it is difficulty with managing the multiple aspects of ‘paying attention’. Attention is not a simple, easily defined matter of focusing on one thing. The Forgotten Disorder: The ADHD Dilemma By Joseph Parton Liberty University Abstract ADHD is a controversial, misunderstood, and even misdiagnosed disorder. Many believe that the disorder is an excuse for bad child behavior and poor parenting. While parenting skills have declined in today’s culture, parent education and structured parenting are not the only necessary tools to address a genetically predisposed disorder. Furthermore, the disorder does not impact children alone as popular opinion would have one believe. This forgotten disorder is causing havoc on the academic and career achievement of many adolescence and young adults.

These are just a few things that parents of children must consider, once they are told their child has ADHD. Treatment of the symptoms of ADHD may vary depending on the parents/caregivers personal philosophy, age of sufferer, and degree of symptom. Stimulants work to help the child stay on task, and are thought to work 70% to 80% of the time (WebMD, 2010). Some popular examples of stimulant medications are Ritalin, Concerta, and Adderall XR (WebMD, 2010). Non-stimulants are used if the child does not respond well or at all to a stimulant medication.
While they try their best to deal with their child’s behavioural problems as best they can, the stigma from the child’s peers and teachers only make things that much harder. Ontop of that, children with ADHD also suffer from sleep problems, and while their energy level suggests the sleep is not needed, the lack of sleep definitely poses a problem on their behaviour during the rest of the day. As a result most mothers are extremely stressed out, and studies show that the stressful obligations that come with being the parent of a child with ADHD increase the parents’ alcohol consumption.
