Viability of Orthopedic Center October, 2011 After evaluation of the Service Line Development Case Study the viability and the demand for the service of an orthopedic center for Trinity Community Hospital was determined as the most valuable service line to consider for the facility and the community. In the market area of the hospital it was found that the largest population in the region was the ages of 18-64 at 63% of the total population, with the second largest population being the age of 18 and under at 24% of the total population. First of all, the hospital possess an orthopedic surgeon on the board of directors, this is an advantage for the knowledge of the importance of the orthopedic center from a professional standpoint. Also having this physician on board will allow recruitment of other orthopedic physicians and physical therapist to be easier due to the fact that his office is opening a branch office near the hospital in approximately three months. This will bring in five new surgeons to the facility and will allow for almost immediate need for the new orthopedic center. Another advantage to the orthopedic center is that another orthopedic branch of physicians are opening an office space adjacent to the facility that will possess six other orthopedic surgeons. These physicians will be in the office space within six months and all are in the process of applying for privileges to the hospital. This amount of new and existing orthopedic surgeons to the facility is a large complementally component to the new center. Trinity Community Hospital already possesses 20 operating rooms and 136 medical/surgical beds, which would allow for orthopedic surgeons to begin serving the community while the new center is constructed. The hospital also already has X-Ray, CT Scanners, and a MRI scanner. Nuclear medicine and ultrasound are also available on campus. These are all needed and used by orthopedic physicians and will allow the orthopedic service line to start quicker than other service lines because the facility already houses these services. Of course, these scanners and specialty areas will have to be added on to and updated with the new center construction but it will be utilized with great need until the center is
