Impact of Technology in Healthcare Delivery Technology makes the world go round and it comes as no shock that it continues to have a major impact on how healthcare is delivered in the U.S. Hospitals depend on many different types of technology to allow them to be able to function daily. One example would be information technology. About 10 years ago, most hospital records were kept in files and folders in cabinets. But over the years there has been a shift to information technology.
When ensuring that every patient receives quality care there are several things we must consider such as healthcare costs, medical technology, and most of all the credentials of physicians chosen to render services to patients. All these things play a key role in providing quality healthcare. First there is the insurance part of our healthcare system and many are concerned about the rising cost in healthcare. Managed care companies are collecting more in premiums but yet paying less for services rendered to it is members. Most people have a managed healthcare plan through an employer or self employment.
These are both huge advantages in a fast paced industry however; electronic medical record keeping seems to have more advantages to the industry. Using the electronic method, companies are able to have multiple users of the system, the software used is able to prevent errors from being made, the records and data are more easily accessed, and the software is available quickly in any situation, which comes in handy in emergency situations, it takes up less storage, documentation is legible, and the company is able to keep track of medication use (Administrative Medical Assisting). Although both ways of keeping records has been proven to work in the healthcare industry, electronic methods have proven to be more successful. With advantages comes disadvantages and both manual record keeping and electronic record keeping have disadvantages as well. Some disadvantages of manual record keeping include; only being able to be used by one person at a time, easier to misplace, more storage space is required for paperwork and errors or more likely to occur to do misprints and bad writing (Administrative Medical Assisting).
Trends and Issues Paper (Benchmark Assessment) Health care is a fast growing industry locally and globally. In conjunction with the fact that there are set of policies, rules and regulations that everyone has to understand, need to obey and implement whether it be locally or globally. This paper will discuss more about the global approach of health care delivery globally and multinational organizations. “Benchmarking is a process of comparison between the performances characteristics of separate, often competing organizations intended to enable each participant to improve to its own performance in the marketplace.” (Medical Bulleting, 2007, Vol.12 No.2). This requires good planning and continuously improving the process among employees to implement their programs in order to meet the requirements to the customers and to stay above other competitors.
It can be used concurrently and is updated continuously. EHR can provide medical alerts and reminders, such as abnormal lab results. The EHR also allows specialty groups to have customized screens, which makes it more flexible. It can also be used to improve risk management outcomes. Finally, it will provide more accurate billing information and it will allow providers to submit their claims electronically.
The most significant new technology requirement for the health care industry in my opinion is the utilization of electronic health records (EHRs). Electronic health records are a repository of patient data in digital form which is securely stored and exchanged. EHRs have the ability to be accessed by multiple users. It contains past, present and future information and its purpose is to support continual, efficient and quality health care (Häyrinen, K., Saranto, K., & Nykänen, P., 2008). EHRs surpass the standard clinical data collection in a physician’s office and provide a wider view of a patient’s care.
As technology continues to improve, the range of potential uses of telemedicine will increase. What are some of the benefits of telemedicine? Research two telemedicine projects, at least one in Cambodia, and compare them within your essay. Telemedicine is a media which is used to exchange medical information from one place to another place through the Internet or electronic devices, in order to improve patients’ conditions. Since the rapid development of technology, telemedicine has been used in healthcare services all around the world, mostly in developed countries.
Professor Harold Griffin Health Information System– HSA520 December 11, 2011 Future Reform Today, information is increasing within the healthcare system and as technology changes, more opportunities become available for HIM professionals who can adapt to a new and ever-changing work environment. According to Blumenthal (2010), “The future looks bright, but the vision can’t become reality without first laying a firm foundation. Meaning, technology like electronic health records will be available, 24/7, in every medical facility in the world one day. Unfortunately, as stated by Clare and Pierce (2006), “a “perfect storm” is forming in healthcare around how we create, use, share and protect the knowledge needed to deliver cost-effective care.” The health care information technology is not something that can be stagnant, and once the technology is created it must continue to change and evolve to be reformed for the future. Predict the form and function of medical health records in 2030 (provide specific example to support your response).
The range of products that they offer is pretty important and also the constant innovation. Cardiac Science is always trying to get ahead in their business, for instance nowadays is concentrating in developing new products that are connected to the hospital information systems, to electronic medical record systems and other information systems. This help to get a unified data management and save time in uploading, arranging and ordering patients data and focus in treating the patients. It will also provide a better quality of info and could help to discover problems either in the treatments processes, the patient itself, etc. The second success factor is quite important as well.
Electronic Medical records contain a range of data including, billing information, demographics, age and weight, medical histories, vital signs, medication, allergies, immunization, radiology images, and lab results. It is a complete patient record that allows streamlining and automation in the health care setting. Electronic medical Records increase safety through, evidence based decision support, outcomes in reporting, and in quality management. Electronic Medical Records have made a huge impact on the health care field. By moving patient records to computerized system it has improved efficiencies for patients, health
