Cowley-Hunter Grand Canyon University: HCA 450 Quality in Healthcare September 23, 2012 Due to lack of transportation and unanswered emails to medical professionals, I was unable to interview an actual health care provider and converse about their feelings and previous knowledge on the EMR system. Even though I was lacking the interview process I was still very curious on this issue and researched more about it seeing what other professionals said about the benefits and negatives of using this system. Miller, Ph.D., “who is Professor of Health Economics in Residence at the Institute for Health &Aging, University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He received his doctorate in economics from the University of Michigan in 1987, and has been a UCSF faculty member since 1989” (Miller, n.d.). I began to see his stance on why implementing the EMR system, he first navigated through various types of research, then put knowledge gained to use in seeing how effective the EMR system really is and if benefits really do arise. First he interviewed a multitude of physicians to see if they use the electronic system in their office, only about thirteen percent of respondents said they used it on a regular basis. This is a small group that has put this system into affect but the EMR community is gradually growing and improving. The physicians that put the electronic system into effect in their offices have to take out extra time to make sure everything is filled out correctly. “All practices used EMR viewing capabilities, which improve chart availability, data organization, and legibility. Quality benefits depended on the amount of viewable clinical data. The amount of initially viewable data depended on efforts to type in existing paper-based medical record data and to electronically import data from lab, billing, and other systems. One aspect that will make a huge impact on quality when the system is actually put into effect by more organizations is that you will be able to receive care from any part of the world. Since they have your medical records in the electronic system then it will be easy for any healthcare organization to pull up your file and not only does it help with receiving treatment but it also provides a more accurate examination of the patient. Doctors are able to see what has occurred in the past and if it correlates with the current conditions they are facing. The information I found matched up to this article because it presented all the positives and negatives of using the system. One thing I liked about this article is that it provided the knowledge of how to implement new improvement tools to decide if the EMR system was right for the organization and how it would benefit the quality of not only the organization but also the surrounding community, and possible future community with in
