Identify and analyze what you believe to be the most significant new technology requirements for the health care industry. Indicate how providers should approach the implementation of this new technology requirement that you have identified. Provide support for the response. The most significant new technology requirement for the health care industry in my opinion is the utilization of electronic health records (EHRs). Electronic health records are a repository of patient data in digital form which is securely stored and exchanged. EHRs have the ability to be accessed by multiple users. It contains past, present and future information and its purpose is to support continual, efficient and quality health care (Häyrinen, K., Saranto, K., & Nykänen, P., 2008). EHRs surpass the standard clinical data collection in a physician’s office and provide a wider view of a patient’s care. In other words, EHRs focus on a patient’s total health. The information goes wherever the patient goes. The information is shared with other health care providers, labs and specialists. EHRs contain all the information from all clinicians who have provided care to that patient. EHRs allow all members of a health care team, whether primary care, emergency department, labs or specialist, to have immediate access to the most current patient information to provide better quality coordinated care (Garrett & Seidman, 2011). Providers approach to the implementation of Electronic Health Records must be carefully thought out. They should compare the pros and cons of such an implementation.
