The religious group I chose is Jehovah’s Witnesses and the racial group I chose is Asian since I am neither and I am very interested in the religious practices of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that baptism is a symbol of dedicating one’s life to God. Their God is called Jehovah and believe he is the Creator of all things. The Asian race also fascinates me with their cultures and traditions. The Asian race has a few different types of Asians for example there is Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese. These two groups are very different and don’t have much in common. Many people turn away from them because they don’t believe in what Jehovah’s Witnesses believe. I know most people don’t appreciate them coming to their door preaching their religion to them. I am horrible for it because when they come to the door I either don’t answer the door or open the door and pretend I don’t understand English. I don’t believe anyone knows the contributions to American culture they have been a part of. According to "Jehovah's Witnesses" (2009), "Since World War II, Jehovah’s Witnesses have organized relief efforts to help members and more who suffered because of the war, natural disasters or other hardships.” They also have organized literacy programs for people who have no proper…show more content…
Sometimes Americans saw Asians as a threat because in California, Japanese very much controlled the market in some fruits and vegetables. The ways Asians have contributed to American culture by aiding in the construction of the Transcontinental Rail Road and during World War II they fought against the world conflict in a segregated unit in the Air Force (Marshall, 1999). Asians were discriminated on when they began to arrive in the United States. Many Asians thought education was a way to get away from the low paying jobs. The second generation Asians, born in the United States could not get better paying jobs because of the discrimination against them. The source of the prejudice and discrimination will always be that American’s thought they were superior to the Asians. After reading and researching about this racial group I have come to understand them better than I originally did. I didn’t know much of their culture or their history so it was a good look in the past for me. Although I have never treated another human being any differently than how I would want to be treated I think I will look at every Asian in a different light because of what their ancestors have
