A Critical Examination of Retention and Dropout at City College The purpose of this paper is to evaluate a report conducted by The Learning Alliance to investigate student retention at City College. I found several findings from this report helpful in illuminating the retention problem. 1 a. Hispanic males are the most likely to dropout from City College, followed closely by Asian American males. Non-U.S. female citizens are most likely to persist. The report however does not go into specifics about what ethnicity they are. One possible reason of why Hispanic males might be dropping out at such a higher rate may be cultural. For example, many students come to City College to become engineering or pre med majors. 3a. There also seems to be a relationship between students’ preferences for City College and whether they persist or not. Students who chose City College as their first choice school are more likely to obtain a degree from City College. However, as the report does not give any data on those who did not drop out of school but simply transferred, there is a great chance the retention rate is low from students transferring out of the college. It seems likely that a high number of students who did not choose City College as their first choice would eventually drop out or transfer out. 3b. Compared to other majors at the college STEM majors, which include pre med, engineering, math, computer and physical science, have a higher dropout rate. 3c. The connection that may explain the relationship; between a students preference for City College, their choice of major and how likely they are to persist; may lay in their background preparation for college. One theory may be that City College STEM majors, got rejected by their first choice colleges based on grades and SAT scores. These same students both improved their grades and transferred out or they were ill prepared for their course load and dropped out altogether.
