College is a Waste of Time and Money Argumentative Essay In the essay “College is a Waste of Time and Money”, Caroline Bird argues that most students don’t feel like they belong in college. College students, according to Bird, go to college because it is the only thing to do after high school. Students feel pressured by parents to go to college because they think that “it is the right thing to do.” Using statistics, expert opinions, and other types of non-technical evidence, Bird presents many great examples that support her claim. However, one has to keep in mind that this essay is rather dated. Many of the things she claims might not seem relevant now and would most likely need to be updated. Her essay is constructed in such a way that it seems persuasive, but I do not entirely agree with her claim. In her essay, Bird says that most students in college are discontent with their situation because they feel that they are unwanted. Bird claims that colleges know that students don’t like to study and that they are unmotivated by the thought of doing any sort of work. Bird illustrates college as if it were some sort of prison for young adults. Going to college is at best, as she describes it, “a young folk’s home that keeps them out of the mainstream economic life for a few more years.” I don’t believe this holds much truth. If that was the case, most students wouldn’t get part time jobs to actually pay for their classes. Sure there are some students that are still financially supported by their parents but wouldn’t they know if their time and money is actually worth spending on a college education? Bird also seems to blame parents for “forcing” students to go to college. By sending students to college, parents feel that they are doing the right thing. They believe that later one in life, a college education would help
