Running Head: Barriers to Effective Communication Barriers to Effective Communication University of Phoenix CJA 304, Interpersonal Communications Barriers to Effective Communication Communication is a crucial factor that connects diverse societies throughout the World. As communication may appear a simple process, it can be a rather complex process to some individuals. However, there are various ways to establish effective communication into a simple process and overcome the barriers that make the process complex for some individuals. Understanding the communication process and its components is an excellent starting point to becoming an effective communicator and listener. Also identifying some barriers that can cause ineffective communication and overcome them will help the process of effective communication. In the following text, the goal is to describe the communication process, various methods to communicating, barriers to effective communication, and strategies to help overcome the barriers. The Communication Process Learning how communication occurs is an important part to becoming an effective communicator. The five basic steps to the breakdown of the communication flow, these are: (1) transmitting the idea, (2) sending the idea through medium, (3) receiving the idea, (4) understanding the idea, and (5) providing feedback to the message sender (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). The first step is transmitting the idea, which is one individual develops thoughts and has a desire to share the thoughts with others. With the first step, the information forms before it is ready to send the ideas through medium, which is the second step. In the second step, there are various methods that the ideas can be sent such as verbally, written, or body language. The method in which the ideas are sent is the medium.
