Zoos are not a prison for Animals and should not be shut down – I quote from Wikipedia, 26th February, 2012. “A Zoological Garden refers to a zoological park, menagerie or zoo and a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public and in which they may also be bred”. Most countries have at least one National Zoo. Zoos are a place where a great deal of work goes on such as; conserving rare species, educating scientists, school children and the general public; researching the animal kingdom while also being a great tourist attraction. All zoo’s and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) must follow set criteria. Part of this is that they must have a commitment to educating visitors and provide meaningful and effective conservation educational programming. Zoos also help people connect with nature and animals. I believe zoos are a great chance to keep endangered species alive and to protect their species. At many zoos they have excellent breeding and recovery programs. For example, the Melbourne Zoo are saving and breeding the endangered Tasmanian devil. This beautiful and rare animal is dying out because of Devil Facial Tumour Disease, which is a common disease on the devil’s face causing a nasty tumour and infection. This disease kills 90% of adult devils in high density areas. Zoos are giving all endangered animals a chance in life by giving them shelter, food and treatments. A zoo gives scientists and vets a chance to research the weird and wonderful animals of the earth in their local zoos. Scientists use zoos to study common or rare diseases in different animals to find causes and cures; vets would attend to zoos to operate or attend to sick or extremely ill animals who have been rescued from the wild.
