My Philosophy as a Wrestling Coach Wrestling is a sport that has been around since the dawn of man. It is a sport that builds character and discipline, and once you’ve competed, it often carries on for a lifetime. I’ve wrestled on and off since fifth grade and it has been a large part of my life. It’s helped me bond with my father and made me many great friends along the way. Being a sophomore in college now, I have but two years left in my career, and I’m forced to think about what I will do after I’m done. Since the sport has given so much to me, I want to invest that back into coaching all age groups within a “club”, which would include high school kids all the way down to little tykes that are barely in diapers. Within this paper, I want to go over what my philosophy will be as I approach this task. This will be broken down into three categories: club/overall philosophy, coaching philosophy, and practice philosophy. To begin, the purpose of my club/program will be two-fold. The first will be to promote the ancient sport of wrestling, which is important to define since quite often there many misconceptions about our sport. In general, people who are not actually wrestlers tend to associate the term “wrestling” with organizations such as WWF or WCW. However, I will focus on the traditional folk-style wrestling, which is taught from diapers all the way up through college. The second aspect of the club/program philosophy will be the overall goal for each wrestler’s mentality. That is, to develop champions on the mat, in the classroom, and in life. My students will develop life-values such as commitment, dedication, discipline, sacrifice, teamwork, and work ethic. As a whole, they will understand that upholding these values to the best of their ability will allow them to achieve the highest degree of success with whatever they choose to do in their lives.
