However, unlike with abstinence-only education, it is acknowledged that many adolescents sill still have sexual relations. There are also discussions about contraception, which is largely ignored in abstinence-only models. (ASA) According to records from the Center for Disease control and prevention, 870,000 pregnancies happen each year with young women aged 15-19, and about 30000000 cases of STDs are reported each year among 10-19 years old. (APA 1) HIV is contracted in more than half of cases before the age of 25. (APA 1) Because of facts like this, it is important that adolescents are taught how to protect themselves.
4). These days most teenagers learn most of what they know about sexual intercourse from the media or friends, which means they are less likely to understand all of the dangers they might encounter such as: sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, or the emotional toll. The morning after pill is definitely not the only way to prevent pregnancies though. There are other forms that are more effective, and that do not cause as many problems as the morning after pill. First and foremost there is only one way to be 100 percent sure you will not become pregnant.
Researchers confirmed that “it didn’t take repeated exposures—“the vast majority” of subjects reported only one” instance of exposure to gun violence (Holden). Psychologist Jeanne Brooks-Gunn of Columbia University even went as far as stating “a single exposure might have a profound effect, even on a hitherto nonviolent individual” (Holden). However, Holden addresses the doubts of the study of some knowledgeable scholars. There are concerns that the study does not accurately demonstrate that the violence in media provokes nonviolent adolescents to become violent, but rather reveals a relationship between subjects who “already had some violence risk factors” and violent behavior. All in all, Holden identifies that undeniable fact that there is a relationship when children are exposed to violence in media—whether or not it is as significant as shown in the study is to be measured with more subjects and more accurate
Abstinence Only Education Sexual education has evolved over the last twenty years and much has been debated over how sex should be taught in schools across the nation. Those in favor of comprehensive sexual education argue that teenagers are going to have sex because they are unable to control their sexual urges and should be taught from a “safe-sex” approach (Eske, 2003). According to the Abstinence Educator’s Network (AEN) teaching abstinence only education encourages teenagers to take control over their sexual urges and abstain from sexual activity that could put them at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, un-planned pregnancy, and emotional distress. Research shows that abstinence only education can be an effective teaching method to prevent teenagers from engaging in sexual activity. Even though consent can be given in 2 forms; implied or expressed, Sara did not give consent to Jon, Gordon or Chris because drinking causes a person to be vulnerable and incompetent and Sara was drunk when having sex with the boys. Consent is not just about manners and decency; it's actually the law. Legally, you need a partner
It would be great if everyone waited until they married to have sex. Because we are sexual beings by nature, the “just say no” approach has not been working. Abstinence only programs do not give young people
While less than 2 percent contracted AIDS through blood transfusions and hemophiliac medicine. Now were down to 99,483 cases. Another 40,000 of these 99,483 cases were people who had sex with people who fell in the categories above. Then there are those who will never confess to using IV drugs or homosexual activity. Approximately one in four patients receiving HIV treatment are not consistent with their care. Assisting people with HIV remain in care is a way to reduce their chances of getting sick and prevent the spread of the virus. Studies have shown that women who became infected through heterosexual contact were more than likely to remain adherent to medications and treatment. There are men who have sex with men who do not identify or consider themselves as being gay, that are affected by HIV virus. Many of these men live heterosexual lives with their family and children however continue having sex with other men.
Abstract The only vaccine to protect against cancer, the human papillomavirus virus (HPV) vaccine isn't being used by the people who could benefit the most from it. As the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to report relatively low numbers of adolescents (those between the ages of 13 and 17) are getting the HPV vaccine series, experts suggest that lack of education is leading parents to deny children of the HPV vaccine. What Parents Should Know About HPV and the HPV Vaccine HPV is not a new virus. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. HPV is so common that almost all sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives.
Long-term studies of students who use drugs show that very few young people use other illegal drugs without first trying marijuana. While not all people who use marijuana go on to use other drugs, using marijuana sometimes lowers inhibitions about drug use and exposes users to a culture that encourages use of other drugs. * The risk of using cocaine has been estimated to be more than 104 times greater for those who have tried marijuana than for those who have never tried it.12 In Summary: * Marijuana is a dangerous, addictive drug that poses significant health threats to users. * Marijuana has no medical value that can't be met more effectively by legal
