The Morning after Pill The morning after pill is a very controversial subject. When I was in high school I had a friend who told me they were going to use the pill. I did not really think anything of it until a while later that day. I realized that if she is taking a pill after she has already had sex, then the pill must be a form of abortion. I did not want to tell her that the pill was abortion without knowing if that were true for sure though. After school I did a lot of research on the morning after pill and how it works. In Scarlett Chiang’s article “Education on Safe Sex Needed :Poll” she gives a quote from Associate professor Steven Ngai Sek-yum who said “the survey showed the government's 1997 sex education guidelines were outdated. In the past 11 years, things have changed a great deal. No one predicted teenagers could get so much information on the internet. The recent cases of pregnant young girls show the importance of sex education” (par. 4). These days most teenagers learn most of what they know about sexual intercourse from the media or friends, which means they are less likely to understand all of the dangers they might encounter such as: sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, or the emotional toll. The morning after pill is definitely not the only way to prevent pregnancies though. There are other forms that are more effective, and that do not cause as many problems as the morning after pill. First and foremost there is only one way to be 100 percent sure you will not become pregnant. In Bruce Bawer’s article “The morning after is too late for Safe Sex” he points out that “The only truly safe options, as leaders of the religious right regularly point out, are monogamy and abstinence,” but in today’s society that option is unfortunately becoming less and less realistic (Par. 2). Another common form of “safer sex” is the use of a condom. In Frances Grandy Taylor’s article, “In era of AIDS, authors give women alternatives to abstinence” he quotes Gina Ogden saying “Safe sex is a matter of practice. If you do choose to have intercourse, protect yourself with a condom and a spermicide that contains nonoxynol 9. And if he won't use condoms, leave the relationship.” Using birth control is another very common form for preventing pregnancy.
