The problem in the school structure that Graff recognizes is lack of persuasion to get students to argue. This holds true in my personal experiences in academics. Despite the fact the educating administration is trying to avoid violent disputes because of arguments, they fail to see that properly structured arguments are the best way to avoid violence. Without the school system instilling the ideas and values of argument, students will lack an outlet for an argument consisting of words and are more likely to resort to violence for resolution. In a section of Gerald’s essay he advocates that educated conversation be shared with uneducated audiences as a basis for understanding any scholarly topic as well as a basis for a strong argument.
This is where churches are run like a business and they compete against each other, which creates lots of improvements to get new people in. In England, however, there is very little choice, its more like if you are religious and a Christian, you have very little choice but to go to The Church Of England. Another reason why membership and support in religious organisations has declined in the last 30 years is because it is very rare for a child to be brought up religious. Parents and Grandparents have their faith, but opt not to force religion onto their child, instead they would prefer to let the child choose their beliefs themselves. In todays modern day, it is very unlikely for a child to choose to be religious.
Even though both Jefferson and Grant Wiggins learned a good lesson, I felt that Grant was the one that had learn much more. Jefferson was just not open to his family members and those close to him, but had either recorded or kept his feelings inside. When he actually expressed his sadness and frustration to people, I guess some people would classify that as a big lesson learned, but I think Grant went through some major change. Grant had first felt that there was no point in his lifestyle. Why was he living like this?
This story has showed us that we should express what we are feeling and never keep something tragic bottled up inside you for too long. Sometimes one may be surprised to hear that there are others that are experiencing the same feelings or they may see others come forward to help them get through this rough time. There are times that people, possibly friends, acquaintances or just a schoolmate may end up surprising you by actually being a decent person and being someone who cares. No matter which direction one takes, I feel that the main theme of this story was to pass on a valuable lesson to teenagers that they need to confide in someone about what their inner feleings are. A main example from the book is that Melinda kept this huge secret held inside.
It teaches that that we have to respect people that have authority over us. Although, I don’t think a lot of things were right that happened in the book. Yeah, you should respect people that have authority over you, but the people that do shouldn’t take power of that. No one should ever get beat up because they were listening to someone, or they shouldn’t get bullied cause of it either. The teachers also should have stepped in when they saw the fight happening and not just stood there.
We don’t have control of everything in our lives like we thought we did when we were using. In our disease we were dealing with a destructive, violent power greater than ourselves. We need to learn to live differently now and not take control, because half the time, or most of the time it doesn’t work anyways. After we realize this, we become a little happier than were before. However, there is one rule that Washington writes that is important and that many people today have lost knowledge in which is that “every action done in company, ought to be with some sign of respect, to those that are present”. and that is his first and most valuable rule. We find out that Carter’s mother’s obesity has affected him his whole life. He would be extremely embarrassed to do the typical things that a child and mother do like walk together in the mall, attend school events, and go food shopping. Basically Carter did not want to be seen out of the house with his mother due to her weight. Other than her weight being an issue and embarrassing, Carter was afraid of people and their views on his mother and him. Carter knew people would be talking about them and say things such as, “Look how fat the mother is, I hope the kid does not grow up to be that whale one day.” Ultimately, Carter’s self esteem became very high when he grew up and this led him to become a judgmental person.
April 2, 2012 Malcolm X Essay The Autobiography of Malcolm X did come across some inappropriate moments. For example, the drug dealing, gambling, sex, and race. In my opinion, parents should not object the material in the autobiography because it is material students should know and be aware of. Things like this happen in the real world and parents do not want their children to be completely oblivious to their bad surroundings. Even though there was a lot of things in the Autobiography that parents may not find okay for students to read, they need to understand that things like that can happen anywhere in the world.
