The Life of Pi (2 points) 1. Naming- In the book life of pi naming does not play a large societal role. If anything, in the life o pi naming tends to have more to do with the future than anything else. The character Piscine Patel was so named because his father had a friend who loved to tell about Paris’ aquatics. Interestingly enough piscine is the French word for pool, foreshadowing the importance of water in Piscine’s life.

He was thought to be caring, from being the son of a very caring man. Amir was the complete opposite. He was stubborn, very stubborn. He only cared about his well-being, and nobody else’s. He was also very jealous, which I strongly believe led to him not helping Hassan.
Neddy Merrill ’s simple belief in changing his life by simply refusing traditional values. The story starts off with Neddy Merrill taking up the challenge of swimming home through his neighbors’ pools, for “the day was beautiful and it seemed to him that a long swim might increase and celebrate its beauty.” (604) Cheever hints a small case of laughter while describing Neddy’s idea: “When Neddy Merrill tries to do something new, something heroic and legendary, all he can come up with is to swim home through a chain of 16 pools.”(The Swimmer 284) His inexpert personality slowly clashes with reality as the story continues and at the end of the story, Neddy finds his house empty, and falls into a deep hole of confusion and pain. The plot of “The Swimmer” is strange; many of its characters and events are figurative, intentionally handing over a “dreamlike effect” (Coale, 46) to the short story. It is not important whether the events stand by reasoning or the laws of nature. Therefore, instead of speaking of the plot as a whole, it would be more correct to challenge event by event, or in this case pool by pool in order to discuss the cause of Neddy’s defeat which starts halfway through his journey.
Peter shows how he hates work, so the key to his happiness is just not going. Although he Peter was all for his own happiness, Milton began to think in a similar further into the film. This caused the two characters to butt heads. Milton told Peter he would not turn down his radio volume, basically just because it made him happy. A line from Self Reliance by Emerson tells that “their rage is decorous and prudent, for they are timid, as being vulnerable themselves.” Milton’s lack of timidity helped him gain his personal happiness therefore exemplifying transcendentalism.
The king did not understand why the slave had become so quiet after being thrown in the water. The philosopher replied: “Before he had tasted the calamity of being drowned, he knew not the safety of the boat; thus also a man does not appreciate the value of immunity from a misfortune until it has befallen him.” In “The Yoga of Knowledge” one of the main themes is the concept of nonattached work. Nonattached work also ties into teens taking everything for granted by the performing of ones duty without concern of the results. Teens often do stupid actions and don’t care about what the outcome is or even think about what’s going to happen after what they have done. However, in “The Yoga of Knowledge” Arjuna, a king, is faced with a dilemma: He knows it’s wrong to kill his cousins and uncles who are on the opposing side, but he knows that it is his duty to his duty to fight for his country as king.
