What does Neddy Merrill discover about himself during his swimming journey? The story of The Swimmer was written in the early 60’s by John Cheever. It talks about the main character Neddy Merrill, a slender man who had financial difficulty and broken family, swum across the country to reach his sold and empty house where he once had his best time in life with money and home. Through swimming into different pools of the neighbors and friends, he wished to get underneath the water by finding himself in this quiet and peaceful world without getting interrupted by the noises outside so as to establish the confidence and self-esteem from the tragedy of his life. He started his swimming journey with the first stop at the Westerhazys’ pool. He was excited to discover the swimming routes and determined to start this journey. Even the routes were unclear and vague, he didn’t get scared by the uncertainty as he did have the faith that he would make his way out to the destination that would bring him hopes and lives. He described himself as an “explorer” (x), and “pilgrim” (x) because he believed that no one around him would have the same thought and desire like him being so desperate in finding himself from the lost. “His life was not confining and the delight he took in this observation could not be explained by its suggestion of escape” (x). This explained that he resented his current life so much that he would pay at all costs in seeking his comfort zone for peace by escaping from the reality. Neddy had an “inexplicable contempt for men who did not hurl themselves into pools” (x) and he swum like a “choppy crawl” (x) made a big contrast with his personality.
