Ways to Make Students Feel Welcome in the Classroom

Entering a classroom for the initial time is a “scary” situation for many students. In fact, many students spend several weeks with their stomachs in knots anticipating that very first day. Since students spend so much of their day in the classroom, the teacher needs to provide a welcoming atmosphere where students of various ability levels can grow both academically and emotionally. Since I feel strongly about making students feel welcome, I usually send a letter before school that tells a few fun facts about me and shares a brief message about how excited I am to meet them on the first day of school. I hope this letter eases some of the anxiety students feel before school. Classroom preparation is also a major part of before school activities as I try to create a room that provides a sense of warmth for every child. On the first day of school, I greet students by name at the door with a smile. I have found this initial greeting eases many students anxiety. Once all the students arrive, we spend several days getting to know each other. These days encompass classroom interviews, playing inside and outside games, bringing in memory boxes from home and various other activities that help promote a community of learners. Since not all students can find their “niche” on their own these games help them locate students with similar interests.
