These are called ‘shame shows’, shows that give us what we want, but what they give us is so shameful that we wouldn’t even admit we love them to other people. So why do we watch these shows? Is it because we find these shows relatable, characters around our age going through similar situations? Situations involving juicy gossip, drama, beautiful people falling into tough situations. Violence on T.V is a major factor that influences most children.
There are television sets in nearly every household in America. Therefore most children grow up watching television. The problem is that television programs are becoming increasingly violent. Regularly watched, these programs can cause harmful effects on children. Children, being easily influenced, will imitate the television characters.
Tyler Scarpa Eng101-Chambers 12/3/12 Persuasive Essay-Media Violence Columbine, Virginia Tech., rising violent crime rates and even the occasional school fight all have varying severities but, can all be linked back to one thing, media violence. Media today has a strong influence on society as a whole however; small children and young adults are the most susceptible to modern media’s influence. Children between the ages of four and eight are particularly vulnerable to media such as movies and cartoons. The reason for this is because their brains cannot yet discern between reality and fiction. When children witness acts of violence from the media, they begin to believe that it is normal and so they begin to act upon the instances of violence and anger they witnessed.
If exposed to violent TV for an extended amount of time, it may be able to desensitize anyone, especially if they come from an already broken home or bad neighborhood. To say that because of this desensitizing, everybody is to be more violent would not be accurate. Many who have broken the law or committed crimes against man don’t even have access to TV. People in bad neighborhoods or broken homes or schools are more prone to violence because of what they see around them,
Some are convinced that societal violence has intensified as violent video games have been introduced into the media and to generations. This is tied into several copycat instances that Bok focuses on. The film Natural Born Killers is actually said to be linked to more copycat violence more than any other movie. (Bok) The question the author purposes to her audience is whether or not the makers of this media should be held responsible for these assaults? Secondly, Bok criticizes ideas of desensitization taken into account for these psychologically violent urges to copycat crimes.
Censorship Today in America Censorship is used in various ways in the telecommunicating world TV for example. The United States has so much control over the things we watch on television because of censorship. Censorship is used on television to block derogatory comments or views that said to be inappropriate to children under the age of 17. The broadcasting networks tightened up on programs in language and nudity in the late 90’s. Censorship is used in television by ratings such as General audience, Parental Guidance Suggested, PG-13 strongly advises guidance for children under age 13 and R requires accompaniment by an adult for children under age 17, or 18 in some states.
Vulgar language routinely appears in programs and movies which is accessible to youth. It is realistic and believable to younger youth which can lead them to aggressiveness. As with our American youth viewing these ideas, these images are imposed on the viewers, especially the younger generation. There is a huge amount of younger children that sit and watch television for many hours. In doing that it will handicap their brains.
In addition, this sort of disrespect and violence towards women is unfortunately seen on TV, making it accessible for children and teenagers of today to be exposed to this sort of violence. This can affect the behavior of a child who is used to learning from what they see on TV as well as grow up with the idea that this sort of treatment towards women is normal. Rivers says, “American teenagers have instant access, in their living rooms, to the messages of rock, on the same vehicle that brought them ‘Sesame Street’. Who can blame them if they believe that the images they see
In my opinion I feels like TV censorship should be more strict. Censorship is considered by some to be to lenient already. Many people see TV and wonder how some of the words being said are even being allowed to come out. People are unhappy with rules and regulations around censorship especially when the subject of children comes up. Basically people who want censorship to be more strict want, “protection of minors from pornographic material, protection of information/intelligence of National Security including information regarding the Military (weapons tech, enemy knowledge, etc.
More ways of playing violent video games are created each year, but most of us have this question in mind. Do violent video games influence young people to act aggressively?
