Is the Violence against Women Act (VAWA) an effective law to reduce domestic violence? Domestic violence is a type of abuse that affects many parts of our society. It involves injuring someone who is usually a spouse or partner but it can also be a parent, child or other family member. According to the article “ Who are the victims of Domestic Violence?”, It is the most common cause of injury to women ages 15 to 44, victims may suffer physical injuries such as bruises or broken bones, or they may suffer emotional injuries from depression, anxiety or even lose communication with their society. This law provided $1.6 billion to intensify the investigation and prosecution of the violent crime committed against women. It also increased pre-trial detention of the accused and establish automatic and mandatory restitution on those convicted, and also allowed civil redress in cases prosecutors chose to leave unprosecuted. VAWA’s effectiveness can be seen in the progress that has been made since 1994.
