Neil Postman strongly believes that due to the extent of technology we have today compared to the past 50 years, the idea of childhood is disappearing. This is caused by children being able to easily access ‘the content of the adult world’ through television that is unfolded all at once, making it hard to control the socialization of the young. Postman backs up his argument with figures that show in particular that children are fully engaged in crime and stresses how children lack a real childhood compared to the past 50 years. Although he tries and creates a stronger argument with statistics there is no definite relationship between crime and watching TV, this is just a correlation as other factors may be increasing crime. Sue Palmer is another sociologist that believes the increasing impact of technology and the media over the past 50 years is causing childhood to deteriorate.
I believe that we should decrease the amount of proportions, junk food, and sugars we give to our children. We could also have our children participate in at least an hour of physical activity, have healthy eating patterns, or a combination of the two, with genetics and lifestyle because both play dramatic roles in determining a child's weight. 43% of our kids like to watch TV more than exercise which plays a dramatic role on adolescents especially the girls. And we can stop it obesity with fitness. Fitness is the condition of being physically fit and healthy.
The act of violence is done repeatedly. Decreased negative attitudes toward violence, decreased sympathy for victims of violence and increased belief that violence is the norm are all cognitive effects of video game playing when not in moderation. However, the evidence is not consistent and this issue is far from settled. Many experts have noted that there is a decreased rate of juvenile crime which coincides with the popularity of games such as Death Race, Mortal Kombat, Doom and Grand Theft auto. Teenage players are able to leave the emotional effects of the game behind when the game is over.
The most significant cause of childhood obesity is behavioral and environmental factors (Hubert, HB). According to American Obesity Association, average American child spends significant amount of their free time playing video games or watching TV. During this immobility very few calories are used and larger number of calories is stored in the form of fat. It’s very clear that children who are not participating in outdoor physical activities are in higher risk of being
or more of soda a day. (Erica Roth, 2012 para.5) Soda has many calories and they are not working if off. Teenagers are more into playing video games, or being on the computer than exercising. Children ages 5-17 are more likely to have high cholesterol, diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure. Parents do not seem to realize that their children are going to have all these health problems.
Watching TV is fun and education for children, but in my opinion, screen time should be limited to no more than one hour a day while in child care and early education settings. The main reasons of this are because too much screen time can increase the risk of becoming overweight, lead to troubles in falling asleep, as well as result in some emotional, social and attention problems. Firstly, the more TV children watch, the greater his or her risk is of becoming overweight. For instance, kids often snack on junk food while watching TV. Therefore, they can develop an appetite for unhealthy food.
Children who are older may be able to understand the difference between fantasy and reality a little better, therefore older children should be able to play games at a parents discretion. Some experts say,” kids are attracted to video games not so much by the violence, but because the games present puzzles or problems to solve (Sherry 1). The media and many other angry parents like to find a source to blame such as video games. Although video games are very entertaining and becoming more of a virtual reality the truth
Have they all just become dangerously lazy? Is it something in the water? Are the schools to blame? It’s a good thing students are forced to do a minimum amount of community service hours in order to graduate otherwise many students wouldn’t gain a sense of civic responsibility or build lifelong habits of helping others. Teenagers of America are obsessed with social networking sites and online gaming.
Why PE Should be Mandatory Obesity has climbed in young people since the 1980’s. Kids have more things to entertain themselves, such as video games, television, and other electronic devices. So what can we do to lower obesity in young people? We can teach kids in school why it’s important to be and stay in shape, through PE class. By doing activities that the kids would enjoy rather than doing activities they don’t like and wouldn’t participate in.
