The woman behind the veil. In the beginning of the twenty-first century, we live in a post 9/11 world, filled with agitation, anxiety and fear of Islam. This fear of Islam developed since Huntington’s theory of the “clash of civilizations”, which clearly separated the West and the “Rest”, and opposed the West against Islam as a whole. Since the birth of this thesis, the idea that Muslims hate the West, specifically demonstrated by the attacks of 9/11, Western people start to question Islam and its principles. One of those is veiling, which is a globally polarizing issue, a spotlight for struggle between Islam and the West, and between contemporary and traditional interpretations of Islam. Veiling has been abused and insulted in many different places, societies and circumstances across time. However, its biggest misuse is especially harmful today with respect to the Muslim veil, often seen by the West as a challenge to modernity and secular awareness, and even as a terrorist threat. Besides, it has become a symbol of Islamic solidarity and anti-Western sentiment. Part of my goal in writing this paper is to shine a bright light on the veiling stereotypes of Muslim women, hidden within the dark shadows of Muslim societies. Exposed in such light, I hope that they will lose much of their power to harm us. In order to solve a complex and colorful puzzle, we must uncover and come up with an answer to the main question: Who is the woman behind the veil? This paper will focus on the identity of the unveiled woman, on the motivations why one would cover herself, if she does it out of free will, and on the controversial issue around the Muslim veil that most immigrants in France wear, which causes political and social debates.
