This section is also consists of two parts. The first part is racial discrimination against blacks by the whites while the second section is racial discrimination against blacks by the blacks. 1 - A background of racial discrimination in the United States: Racism in the United States has been a major issue ever since the colonial era and the slave era. Legally sanctioned racism imposed a heavy burden on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latin Americans. European Americans (particularly Anglo Americans) were privileged by law in matters of literacy, immigration, voting rights, citizenship, land acquisition, and criminal procedure over periods of time extending from the 17th century to the 1960s.
DHL and the men could not reach an agreement, therefore, on behalf of the federal government, the EEOC helped to process the charges and pursue litigation. The EEOC has filed racial discrimination charges against DHL. African Americans have been the subject of discrimination since the 1600s when they were brought to America as slaves. From 1890 to 1940 the Jim Crow laws enacted throughout The United States openly segregated Black and White Americans in public places. Black Americans were publically beaten, frightened, and even killed (Magar, 2010).
To conclude, black people all over the world, wherever they live were for a long time victim of racism for their skin color. People treated them badly only because they had a darker skin color, forgetting that that we are all humans and the color of our skins an where we come from doesn’t indicate our personalities and beliefs. Black in America suffered a lot for reason of racism and went through the hard ships and difficulties
Racism in Native Son “Racism exists when one ethnic group or historical collectivity dominates, excludes, or seeks to eliminate another on the basis of differences that it believes are hereditary and unalterable” (Fredrickson). Racism affects all types of people- from African descent, Asian, Latin, and even European. When using the phrase “that’s racist”, the most common race that people think it is aimed towards is African-American. African-Americans have had it hard since the slave era. After dealing with the hardships and finally escaping those times, they had to deal with racism still in the early 20th century.
Racism is like a disease, it is capable of spreading and infesting people’s minds and like any other illness, this needs to be cured. African-Americans in the USA have suffered racism immensely since the very beginning and have been trying to fight against discrimination and injustice for a very long time, in fact some still are. Blacks were classified as second-class citizens, especially since the Americans gained an upper hand from their quest for independence. Although we do not face discrimination to that extent today, the process of getting here and overcoming discrimination was long and definitely not easy for the racially oppressed groups. The inhuman nature of racism against the African-Americans back in the 19th and 20th century is definitely seen as a dark part of America’s history.
However, the opposing side was strongly worried that the United States government was going to have a loss of power. The opposing side had a goal to make the debate drug out as long as possible, by having long speeches about how the Bill angered them. Barry Goldwater stated that he believed that the United States government should not get involved in the employment area because there is “no constitutional basis for the exercise of federal regulatory.” Also stated in this selection Senator Sam Ervin says that it would ruin the relationships with the state and the federal government. Last but not least Senator John Stennis pointed out mainly that citizens should be able to their own businesses or property as that wished upon. (Source 6) Filibusters was another main event that took part in of the passing of the bill.
Even if an individual isn’t a Christian they can feel welcome in America to worship whom they choose to worship. But unfortunately America has a sad history. If we look to the past America’s history reflects a plethora of negativity. From the slaughtering of Native American’s who are the true first Americans. To slavery of Africans who even when freed still were subject to prejudice and racism because of the laws of America.
