Joshua Horn Andrew Jacobs English Comp. 2 03/10/14 True Action Film An action film must meet certain criteria to be great. It always needs to leave the viewer on the edge of his seat. Obviously, the action film needs a protagonist and an antagonist to have conflicts, but bad action films may have them as well. I believe to have a great action film, it also needs to have a girl to win over or to fight for them. Then, lastly, there needs to be a great fight scenes. All these qualities are needed and can be found in the action film called “Never Back Down.” “Never Back Down” is about a kid who transfers schools and gets bullied by a guy who happens to be an MMA fighter. He trains with this local great MMA fighter not only to win the girl, but also defend himself and his close friend he makes while at school. This is the main theme of the movie that is the story line that leads up to the action. “The New York Times” states,” enrolled in a high school where social status is determined by the ability to render peers unconscious with your bare hands, Jake finally discovers the therapeutic benefits of breaking faces” (Times). Also, Roeper states in a review,” It’s mindless action, with no excuses.” In these two reviews they are stating that these are great action films by definition. They have nonstop action sequences that will blow your mind. Then the thought of being at a high school that to be cool a kid literally has to beat kids to a bloody pulp with their bare hands. These reviews portray the movies to be very action packed and intense. In this movie, the protagonist is a guy named Jake Tyler. He is one of the main characters needed to make an action film reach the expectations to become a great. Jake meets the standards of the protagonist because he is the one fighting for the right reasons. He doesn’t want to fight for selfish reasons, or really fight at all. He
