To protect and serve our community Well the work of a police officer may appear glamorous and exciting on television or in movies, it’s actually more diverse than you’d guess from popular dramas in general, police officers enforce the statutes, laws and regulations that are created by government to protect life and property. But the actual life of a police officer is spend on responding to crimes in progress, patrolling assigned areas to maintain public safety, interviewing witnesses and suspects, apprehending fugitives, collecting evidence, writing reports and providing testimony in court. The decision to become a police officer has many advantages to succeed in this career field. There is a need for more candidates in this law enforcement field, with the tough application process many applicants fail to be truthful on the application and are disqualified for false statements, in order to be considered as a police officer, the applicant must also have a clean background with no felonies or warrants on their record. Once the application is turn in, the written and physical exam will be their next step, while many don’t have a problem with the written exam, it’s the physical exam where many will fail because of not being prepared or in shape to do the rigid exercises. The positive aspect of a police officer is the opportunity to retire after twenty years of service, with a very good pension. The starting salary for a police officer is fifty thousand a year and can increase with incentives, working night shift, being bilingual, and have a degree can easily increase to sixty thousand a year. Officer Lopez, a current police officer, stated “There are many reasons why I wanted to be a cop, but the main reason was this job allows me to make a difference, and perhaps even safe a life.
