Quotation Analysis Quotation: "I wanted you to see something about her----- I wanted you to see what real courage is." Atticus was speaking to Jem when he came back from Mrs.Dubose's house that night after she's dead. Mrs.Dubose left a "gift" for Jem, and Atticus was trying to tell Jem that Mrs. Dubose was suffering from pain and that's why she was so mean to everyone in town. This quotation is significant because it shows that Atticus is insightful. Atticus told Jem that Mrs.Dubose was the "bravest person" he ever knew. Jem couldn't understand his own father. Why would he admire a mean old lady, while everyone in Maycomb hated her? This actually showed that Atticus is a real thinker. He didn't act like everyone else, trying to hide away from Mrs.Dubose because she's mean on the outside. He even encouraged Jem to go read for Mrs.Dubose. Atticus is a person who can really understand other people's situations, and realize the positives about someone. Therefore,it shows that Atticus is insightful. The other reason that this quotation is significant is because it reveals the theme of not judging people too soon. Mrs.Dubose acted very mean to everybody. She hated kids(like Jem and Scout), and she even hated Atticus when he was just trying to talk to her. Because Jem and Scout didn't know about Mrs.Dubose's addition to morphine, and they had no idea how much pain Mrs.Dubose suffered. So they thought that Mrs.Dubose was the"meanest woman ever lived". When Atticus came back from Mrs.Dubose's after she died, he told Jem and Scout why she was so mean to everyone. His explanation made Jem and Scout start to understand Mrs. Dubose, and eventually realize how courageous Mrs. Dubose actually is.
