The setting of the poem is around 1896 and in a small town and a cemetery in England. The town was close and everyone knew everyone. This town produced very good runners. There are many characters in this poem including the speaker, the runner, the best friend and the towns people. The runner dies in this poem “Shoulder-high we bring you home” line 6. ---------. The speaker of this poem takes the form of one of the deceased's friends. The Format of this poem falls in the ode format. The poem is iambic tetrameter meaning that the lines consist of an unstressed syllable and a stressed syllable. For example in lines one and two. “The time | you won | your town | the race” “ we chaired | you through | the mar | ket-place”. The rhyme scheme of the poem is AA BB, as seen at the end of lines one, two, three, and four. “A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme between lines of a poem or song. It is usually referred to by using letters to indicate which lines rhyme” Wikipedia 1. Race and place rhyme and by and high rhyme. By and high are not look alike rhymes they sound rhyme. Every poem needs action in it. The action in this poem deals with celebration and death. The celebration part in the poem is dealt with the runner winning the race for the town. The runners glory is short lived when he dies with brings on the death part. The towns people show great pride in the runner as they chaired him through the market-place. Emotion is a big part of poems weather it’s a happy poem that cheers you up or a depressing poem that makes you sad. This poem deals with glory and depression ending in more depression then glory.
