Chapter 1: It’s Not Who You Know; It’s Who You Get to Know A question that many have wondered is, “How can such unproffesional men make it to some of the most highly respected and powerful positions?” (Pg 25) Considering some of the most highly respected men in politics who came from “nowhere” and how they climb the ladder to the top is remarkable, but there is quite a bit of technique in mastering politics. For Lyndon Johnson, he believes, “getting ahead is just a matter of getting to know people” (Pg 25). Lyndon also had another method some would come to call the “Johnson treatment”. While most politics believe that getting acquainted with the communities wants and needs are the most important and productive way to climb the ladder, Johnson
Robert Dean compared to Winston Smith is a more accomplished individual due to the fact that he lives in a society where he has the social freedom to pursue the career he chooses. Robert is a highly educated lawyer whereas Winston works for the Ministry of Truth where his job is to create government propaganda and make Big Brother seem almighty. Winston’s society everyone is under surveillance and their rights have been stripped as a whole, in Enemy of the State Robert has been selected as an individual by the government because they fear that he has
Yet a wise man such as Atticus does not fully understand how the citizens of Maycomb can be so irrational and unjust in their prejudiced views of others. This is shown in Part one of Harper Lee’s novel as Atticus tells his brother Jack, ‘Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I will never truly understand.’ Atticus is a great influence on Scout through his actions and words, however he does not force her to act in this way. Atticus has the highest respect for everyone in Maycomb, regardless of gender, age or race. This is shown in his defence for Tom Robinson and his employment and loyalty to Calpurnia. He also demonstrates this when he explains Boo-Radley’s situation and reprimands Scout for treating a boy at her school badly because he was of lower class.
Jack Merridew Personality Jack is the novel’s primary representative of the instinct of savagery, violence, and the desire for power. Confident, power-hungry, well positioned natural leader. At first he hasn't lost his moral propriety and behaviour that society instilled in him at first. Chapter 1 he is unable to kill a pig however throughout the book his obsession with hunting makes him more savage and he then devotes himself to the task(painting himself, carving bloodlust). Becomes more malicious and gains more power, controlling the group.
The new constitution convinced people that Stalin was the man they needed. Hence along with his small group of associates, he continued to fight for leadership while they served him throughout his command. Lavrenti Beria, head of secret police, stood by Stalin until his death. Stalin eventually made a one-man team out of the constitution. Since Stalin was a paranoiac man who was obsessed of power, he was ruthless towards people and was not afraid of killing anyone who might oppose or opposed him.
However, he was a very good conqueror. He wasn’t even forced to go into this war. He decides to start wars because he thinks he has a lot of power. He could’ve been doing something good for other people but only came up with ideas to show himself. I think Napoleon is a bad leader because I don’t like leaders that focus
All throughout the book, Guy Montag stands up for what he believes is right and not like the dystopian government that takes place during that time. He is a very intelligent man, and has a good head on his shoulders. Even though he is really smart, he believes he is a traitor. Even worse than a traitor, a fireman traitor. As feeling like the traitor he is, he still will not give up his books.
I think one of the main traits to be a good leader is if you save your men more than you get them killed. Odysseus has many encounters where it is life or death situations for his men. The first example of Odysseus being an effective leader or not was on the island of the cicones. Odysseus didn’t make much of an attempt to force his men to leave, who showed a lack of respect to the cicones’s island. This caused the cicones to retaliate and start a fight with Odysseus and his men.
However, the character meets his downfall by "succumbing to an effect caused by a flaw that is tragic” (Orwell). Winston is truly a heroic character because even though he dies while fighting or struggling to face the state which is depicted as a totalitarian, controlling all aspects of human life, he does not give up in his struggles. Winston is a man of high social nature, and this makes him a hero. He works for the Ministry of Truth as an outer party clerk. He does not belong to the “proles” who are the third class in the country living in filthy places.
In the beginning this irritates him and he feels a bit beat. However soon after Ralph takes his side and openly defends him in front of Jack. Though Piggy does not have the looks ideal for the role of leader, he certainly has superior intelligence to all the other boys. Piggy is behind most of Ralph’s success. However if he has something to say, he rarely speaks out loud, instead he just mutters to himself or jack.
