Noah Macri 20 September, 2012 The Themes That Caught Fire Suzanne Collins is a great author who helped create many masterpieces not only in literature but also on television. She worked with many shows on Nickelodeon such as Little Bear and Oswald. Collin’s first real book that was published was Gregor the Overlander, which then lead to the entire Underlanders series. In 2008, Collins began writing The Hunger Games series and in 2009, Catching Fire was released. Collins essentially got the idea for these books from the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur (Suzanne). Most of Collin’s writings are very violent and graphic, and this book is no exception. These uprisings are stared by people who cannot stand their government so they react and do something to change the situation. In this case, the rebellion was sparked by Katniss’ actions in the first Hunger Games and her acts of defiance, but it can be seen that these initial small sparks have resulted in starting a raging fire. The first sign of the fire is seen in District 11 when Katniss is addressing the families of Rue and Thresh. She tells how she respected them and how much she cared for Rue. Then there is an old man in the crowd who whistles a four note song that Katniss had used during the Games. Then the entire crowd salutes her with the raising of their three fingers to the air. As Katniss is leaving the stage, she turns and sees, “A pair of Peacekeepers dragging the old man who whistled to the top of the steps. Forcing him to his knees before the crowd. And putting a bullet through his head” (Collins 62). Unintentionally, Katniss has reinforced the rebellion causing the entire district to go into madness. This is just one example of the rebellion being one of the main themes in this book. Another instance that shows how revolt is a primary theme is when Katniss meets two travelers from District 8, Twill and Bonnie. The survival theme comes from the idea that even without the uprising and the bad things happening, the citizen’s every day life is always a game of survival. Also, this theme of surviving is seen in the actual Hunger Games because the whole point of the Games is to out live the opponents. The thought of rebellion comes from the entire book because rebellion is the primary topic that the entire book revolves around. The last idea is the idea of the overpowering government control and how it greatly influences the people of the districts. This was shown through the way the people were treated in Panam and it also was proven by seeing how strict and merciless the government is.
