UTOPIA IN PLEASANTVILLE AND THE TRUMAN SHOW Pleasantville and The Truman Show both portray the image of a perfect world because everything is perfect including the weather the difference is, in The Truman Show everything is controlled in a huge Hollywood dome. All the characters in both movies have the do the same thing every day of their live in a same routine at a certain time. In Pleasantville the residents have no idea about knowledge, sex and colour and everything and everyone is black and white so that people would not live in a state of chaos. In a normal world, many problems are dealt with, such as AIDS, unemployment, Poverty, climate change and competition which are common in civilization. However in Pleasantville the people have no idea about such therefore they do not worry about it because they don’t exist. In one scene showing how perfect Pleasantville is the basketball scene where all the basketball players shoot with unfailing accuracy and for the players it’s a normal thing, It becomes a shock when one of the characters Skip who wants to ask Mary-Sue (Jennifer) out but gets angry when he hears Bud say that she might say no, he throws the ball to the basket but instead it hits the board and doesn’t go in, everybody pauses and looks at the ball and try to stay away from it. They are not used to this kind of disappointment, but what really happened was that Skip felt hat a normal human being should feel, an emotion, ANGER. The invasion of outsiders has caused them to think about their future and decide to break the utopia down and actually show these people that there is more to life than just doing the same routine everyday and holding hands seeing it as a big step to starting a relationship. The Truman world is also utopian but the difference is, it’s a controlled utopian world where everything and everyone is being controlled by the
