Americans Deserve the Right to Carry Weapons Strayer University ENG 215 2013 Americans Deserve the Right to Carry Weapons Gun laws should be aimed toward protecting and preserving the interests of law-abiding citizens and they should be allowed to carry weapons as long as discretion is used. This will be done by giving citizens the right to carry weapons. With the way that things are going in this present world the need for individuals carrying their own weapons seem to be increasing tremendously. Christoff & Kolet 2012) Good law abiding citizens including women and children are becoming victims of isolated acts of terror at the hands of individuals who have no regard for laws, rules or regulations. This awareness has caught the attention of not only the citizens of our nation (which are concerned with their safety),but it has captured the attention of our law makers and government officials. The president of the United States is calling for action and is pursuing new laws and sanctions in order to bring a sense of security back to our nation. What should be done? All guns can kill whether it is a low caliber hand gun or a high capacity machine gun. A bullet is a bullet whether it goes into a revolver or a magazine. Firearms are designed to kill but the problem is not the guns. The problem is the people using the guns. In the United States death by homicide ranks at number 15 in comparison to health conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, cancer, blood poisoning, etc. (LeDuc, 2013)This is a high rating when put in perspective that in most cases one cannot control contracting most illnesses however man can control murdering people. In 2011 8,583 deaths occurred due to the use of firearms. (Simon, 2013) This is the type of statistical data that our officials use to form opinions on how weapons impact our society. The focus seems to be on the mechanism (the firearms) rather than who uses the mechanism. I referred to the guns being a mechanism to illustrate one point. Guns don’t kill people, humans do. In simplicity, guns are created things and in most cases they were created without any form of organic or invented intelligence. The problem is that people are trying seek laws against the guns and not the people using the guns. The guns are not the problem, people are.
