The Persian Empire An empire’s success cannot occurred without its wise leaders, sophisticated political policies, economics, and religious prosperity. Throughout ancient Western civilization, the Persian Empire has attracted people’s deep attention to their contemporaries by its ancient and long-standing history and glorious culture. There are many reasons for the success of Persia. The purpose of this paper is to explain how the Persian Empire was successful by some details, such as leaders, policies, religion and economy. After these conquests, Persian territory had an immense expansion. The big issue, which confronted the leaders was understanding how to govern a huge country. The extraordinary leaders dominated this huge country by a series of policies. Medes and Babylonians had different religious beliefs and government systems compared to Persians. Compared to the other invaders, Persia took moderate political policy, which was no kill, rob or enslave captives. The wise Persian governor allowed their captive people to survive and work, pay the taxes or tributes, which have been labeled“colonialism” today. Based on this strategic policy, the Persian governor tried to earn more people to submission by some specific measures. First of all, the Persian governor showed people their respects to Babylonian’s religious beliefs by allowing Babylonians to keep their god, Marduk. The other measure the Persian governors had done was they always put armies under strict control in order to protect Babylon as their homeland. “As he stated in a proclamation to the Babylonians, ‘My numerous troops walked around in Babylon in peace. I did not allow anybody to terrorize the country’”(Jim, 24). The new Persian Governor also kept most of civil servants to stay in their old posts. Economic prosperity brought the Persian Empire enormous revenue which was the main resource of the Persian governor to establish infrastructure developments. And ancient Persia, the economic resources composed of the revenue of trade, agriculture and tribute. Darius II is known as the most successful reformer who invented the silver and gold coinage system during the period. The convenience of money carrying motivated the trade expansion. Another tremendous contribution to development of commerce made by Darius was the completion of the ancient Suez Canal. In a manner speaking, undeveloped communication is the biggest factor, which hinders the evolvement of commerce. Darius, as a long-sighted statesman, finished the canalization of Suez Canal and built the “Royal Road”. “ The most famous was the “Royal Road,” stretching 1,600 miles from Susa near the Persian Gulf to Sardis (the old Lydian capital) near to the Aegean” (Coffin and Stacey,60). The completion of the ancient Suez Canal facilitated extending of the trade route from the western to the eastern borders of the empire. Because of such kind of amazing development, the commerce activity unfolded a prosperous phenomenon which also brought Persia enormous tax revenue. Also unlike Cyrus and Cambyses who were satisfied with the receiving gifts from their dependency. Darius II was concerned more about to build up a steady economic foundation.
