In what ways was the British East India Company a fundamentally new type of Economic Organisation? According to a Victorian poet and historian, Thomas Babington Macaulay, the British East India Company (BEIC) was the “greatest corporation in the world”. This dynamic and influential Company flourished during 1600’s to early 1700’s due to many beneficial economic factors. These include the idea that it was the “first state backed company”, which in turn allowed them to monopolise trade with the Eastern Countries. Secondly, the BEIC introduced a joint-stock ownership system, which catered for the Companies economic benefits and allowed them to reap in the rewards of such a mechanism as the joint-stock ownership.
Louis the 14th was a very powerful king that had many positive influences over the country of France. As absolute monarch, Louis the 14th had an incredible strategy for ruling and improving his county, making him noteworthy of the title as the greatest king in the history of his country. Louis was able to increase France’s economy by producing its own goods to trade with other countries, as opposed to purchasing goods from other places, which proves to be more costly. In addition to that, he assembled the most advanced army in Europe at that time. Interestingly, Louis became a patron of the arts, and greatly shaped France’s culture by emphasizing the importance of art and theater, climaxing with the Palace at Versailles.
It was said that a nations greatness was derived from a great navy that was ran well and had multiple strategies. Most of the US greatness in their navy was from the influence they received from the book The Influence of Sea Power upon History. Mahan believed in bringing together certain elements. His elements were trade, as well as a merchant to do the trading, a navy, navy base, and lastly, an empire. His elements allowed the US to establish a thriving navy that would grow to be successful.
There were many factors that helped the growth of The British Empire such as early settlers and trading companies, however the Navigation Acts rapidly accelerated the success of the trading companies therefore expanding The British Empire. The Navigation Acts were a set of laws that kept trade in the hands of the British; this gave them ultimate power over most trade and gained them a lot of wealth and thus success. Government and war played a significant role in the growth of the British Empire which gave them more power such as the EIC winning a number of sea battles against the Dutch which granted another firmum which gave the company more effective trading. Trading companies helped the growth of the British Empire, as without these, there would have been no income, meaning Britain couldn’t gain more land and secure more footholds. The trading companies played a significant role in triggering the Navigation Acts, but it was the acts themselves that put trade in the hands of the British.
Mercantilist legislation passed to expand ports such as Liverpool and Glasgow ensured more exports and imports could be carried out due to the new size and sophistication of the ports = extends trade, revenue and wealth, more funds for war and overseas domination Para 2: Trading companies also played a part in the expansion of empire but could not have flourished without mercantilism. * Trading companies created links with governments abroad - EIC relationships with the Moguls in India lead to them being granted a firmum allowing them
‘The impact of the british empire was more positive than negative.’ How far do you agree with this statement? At its peak, the British Empire was the largest empire that the world had ever known, because of its huge scale it undoubtedly had both positive and negative effects on many. The empire itself had hugely positive effects on the economy of Britain at the time and helped trade between countries within the empire prosper, allowing Britain to buy and sell exotic products such as tea and other spices which would have been previously unattainable. By having such a large empire Britain not only gained Wealth and prosperity but also power and safety through their allies. Despite the numerous positives for Britain many other colonies felt the negative effects of the British empire sparking many conflicts in the past 200 years.
Nebuchadnezzar’s Vanity By Josh King Nebuchadnezzar had quite a valid reason to boast of power, splendor and greatness. He reigned from 605-582 BC; during his reign, he ruled the world. The kingdom of Babylon was beautiful and fortified. Located at the banks of the Euphrates River, it was the trade center and capitol of the empire. King Nebuchadnezzar surveyed the greatness of the city and kingdom and was satisfied.
“He conquered Egypt during the early years of his reign, kept his armies busy in northern Spain, expanded across the Rhine river, and even conquered land along the banks of the Danube river. He also commissioned several generals to conquer Nubia, Arabia, and Mesopotamia. And although those three campaigns failed, it actually ended up promoting trade with said places.”- Augustus; by Garret G. Fagan. Putting an empire to its greatest extent is a sign of a Golden age, as well as promoting trade, and that’s one of the things that caused his reign to be a Golden age. Another factor that set him into the hall of fame was the precedent of “traditional borders” in the Roman empire.
This helped Britain gain such a large Empire because by fighting and winning these wars they gained more of the land and more power over the people, it gives them more money and riches and they show themselves as the dominant country. They were able to then go and gain the other sections of India. Another way Britain gained such a large Empire was through trade. For example when the EIC (East Indian Company) started to trade in India they made money for the army and Britain as a whole, they also gained the trust of the people by trading fairly, and they got well paid in crates of spices, calico, gems and silk by the princes and Maharajas of India when the British helped them fight their battles. This helped Britain gain such a large Empire because by trading they got money and power so that they could send out exploration ships and armies to go to other countries and take it.
