Amy Tan and Maya Angelou come from diverse cultures, but both face the same harsh society of the American culture and beliefs. Both authors discuss their problems and culture differences in their stories. Tan and Angelou each tell about situations in their short stories of being outcasts and coming from different racial backgrounds and trying to overcome these obstacles. Angelou and Tan both have different approaches and style in their writing. I have found some similarities and differences in “Fish Cheeks” and “Champion of the World”.
Ready or not, we started down the unknown abyss filled with rigorous rapids and jagged rocks. The comment towards the rigorous rapids was no joke. The pull of the river was so overbearing it felt as if our raft was being ripped apart by a powerful force beneath us. That powerful force was the pull from the minor waterfall ahead. I felt despair and the feeling of defeat; I knew somebody was going in.
Furthermore, winter is one of the foremost reasons of Ethan’s present circumstances. Winter has devastated Ethan. He changes from a healthy, hopeful youth, with dreams and ambitions, to a crippled and miserable old man. “He’s been in Starkfield too many winters” ( Wharton 13). Starkfield’s winters are capable of trapping its citizens because of their ability to emotionally burden individuals to the point that they lose their dreams in their struggle to survive.

The mountain pine beetle epidemic is causing environmental and social impacts to much of British Columbia. Our forests are very important and will no longer be able to maintain their role if changes are not made. The devastation has had a sweeping impact on B.C.’s ecological, and economical well-being. Additionally, recent studies are drawing attention to the carbon-emitting properties of the dead forests, which is a global concern. A popular misconception developed that the current provincial mountain pine beetle epidemic began in Tweedsmuir Provincial Park.
As Max ventures out to the land of the wild things, he is on a boat and travels through perilous weather and even climbs a mountain. This part of the fantasy might unveil that not only does he have a inflated self-esteem and thinks he's big enough to go through such rough weather unscathed but he was very goal directed and knew where he was going to find the land of the wild things. When Max encounters the wild things, he introduces himself by jumping in and helping Carol, the main character wild thing, destroy the houses. As the wild things try and figure out who/what he is and threaten to eat him, Max's mind races with thoughts on how to get them to listen to him so he lies to them as his sense of grandiosity rises and he ends up telling them he used to be king in another land. He continues to tell them that he can explode their heads off with his powers and as a result should be scared of him.
He meets the man as soon as he goes outside into the brutal Klondike winter, stays close by him throughout the story, and finally kills himself through the effects of hypothermia. (Widdicombe par.9).” In the story “The Open Boat” each of the men in the dinghy is faced with the likelihood of his own death. While they row and wait to be rescued, the realization sets in that they are largely helpless in the face of nature's awesome power. The sea serves as a powerful reminder of the forces of nature: their lives could be lost at any moment. (Elliot par.4)”.
The married couple is strongly influenced by the actions of this snowstorm by allowing its awful mood to impress onto them. Specifically, John faces extreme external challenges with the bitterness of the weather. All forces of nature try against him, but with determination
Additionally, intense descriptions of the landscape further reinforce the precarious image of the environment. The conditions they come across are vindictive. The landscape is wrecked by fire, houses are abandoned and trees are burnt. The setting of the novel is in a bitter and hostile world without meaning. The man and his son struggle to survive in the cruel weather and destructive landscape.
The climate changes have rapidly increased in the years passed and they continue to increase. This is bringing more and more fear into the lives of people throughout the world. Many animal species have started to die off due to the changes in their environment. For example, polar bears live in the arctic and thrive off of the cold temperatures. Since the temperatures have started to rise, the ice that they once lived on has melted and they are having a very difficult time surviving.
