Amy Tan and Maya Angelou come from diverse cultures, but both face the same harsh society of the American culture and beliefs. Both authors discuss their problems and culture differences in their stories. Tan and Angelou each tell about situations in their short stories of being outcasts and coming from different racial backgrounds and trying to overcome these obstacles. Angelou and Tan both have different approaches and style in their writing. I have found some similarities and differences in “Fish Cheeks” and “Champion of the World”. One similarity between the two stories is that they are stories of different cultures living in the Anglo-American society. Tan realizes and appreciates her mother’s intentions and is no longer ashamed of who she is or where she came from. In “Champion of the World”, Angelou and the black people feel some triumph because an African-American man has won a boxing match against a white man. They feel some victory because this symbolizes that black people are not inferior to white men. One difference between “Fish Cheeks” and Champion of the World” is that one is about pride and the other is about shame. Tan feels ashamed of herself and her family. She was also so ashamed of looking Chinese that she wished she had a “slim American nose”. Robert, her crush, was over for dinner and Tan was even more embarrassed of the way her family celebrated Christmas because they didn't eat the traditional American dinner. Another embarrassing moment was when her father belched after dinner to show his gratitude towards her mother for cooking. Angelou’s story is about pride. Although the black people were considered to be inferior to the white people, they did not feel ashamed to be black. Instead, they were proud and only wanted to be respected and treated equally, and not discriminated because of the color of their
