The moral panic of heavy metal and its cult ties The term moral panic can be defined as “a condition, episode, person or group emerging to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests” (Cohen, S 1972). A social deviant is a person or thing that violates the social norms of a group and faces disapproval from that group that it has deviated from these people are perceived as the folk devil which is an image that is created for them by the media. This image that is thrust upon certain groups can become a sort of stigmatation or a form of stereotyping. This perceived folk devil than causes a moral panic to ensue. An example of this would be looking at the music genre of heavy metal. According to the encyclopaedia Britannica heavy metal music is a “genre of rock music that includes a group of related styles that are intense, virtuosic, and powerful. Driven by the aggressive sounds of the distorted electric guitar”(Walser, R 2014) it has been labelled as a form of devil worship which promotes cult worshipping and although this may be true to some artists, the term heavy metal is a very broad topic with many sub-genres that fall under the umbrella. I will be discussing the reasons that the genre as a whole has caused society to develop a moral panic around the issue. The main issues that people have with the music genre seem to be related to black-metal and death-metal bands such as “Mayhem” and “Murduk” and although, to these sorts of bands the moral panic may be seen as warranted. It is a judgment that is passed to all the genres including the genre white-metal which is Christian heavy metal such as the bands “Mortification” .So due to the black heavy metal bands that have been associated with satanic imagery the other bands within the genre have developed into a folk devil with the music genre creating a moral panic, that is around the music saying
