The Legend of Squanto This past week in class we have watched the movie Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale written by Darlene Craviotto. This movie tells of and Native American that is taken from his home of Massachusetts around 1620 to 1630. Eventually he returns to find his village that is destroyed. They died because of disease. Squanto and the English were both affected by each other because Squanto learned several things from the English, they learned some things from them, and both benefitted. Squanto had to help the whites in the end of things. They wouldn’t have survived without someone helping them. Squanto taught the whites how to plant crops, this gave them food to eat and cook. He also taught them how to hunt. This again gave them more food and some fur to trade if they needed to. Squanto also taught the whites simply how to survive the new land. This helped the whites out tremendously. Second, Squanto had to learn how to communicate with the whites when he escaped his kidnappers. So when he was helped by some monks at a monastery, they taught him English while he was recovering from his injuries. Squanto also learned how to be a pacifist, or a peacemaker. He is the one who, in the end, makes peace with the English settlers. This was after the Jonathon Edwards shot Squanto’s new tribe leader’s son. Lastly, The English settlers benefitted the most. They were taught how to work and survive the new land of America. They had the better technology and weapons. They could easily hunt more and fight off anyone or anything that attacked them. The English were basically given this brand new mass of land to explore for whatever they wanted: gold, oil, fur. They could find all of these things for themselves and not have to trade for them. In conclusion, both the English and Squanto were affected by the newness of other people. Squanto learned the English language,
