Rock’n’roll did not just emerge out of nowhere; it has roots just like any other musical genre. In the late1940’s, upbeat Chicago style blues began to fuse with R&B rhythms. This fusion of styles created something completely new. Some of the earliest rock artist didn’t write there own songs, they would recreate old blues style songs and there unique touch to it. The term rock’n’roll actually came to be a few decades before the new wave of music in a Trixie smith song “my baby rocks me with one steady roll.” At the time the term was slang for dancing and “roll” was used as a synonym for sex. Even in the 50’s rockstars seemed to live a more chaotic lifestyle but this did not become apparent to the public until the 60’s. Drug use has always seemed to be a big part of rock’n’roll and to this day that idea is not fading. LSD being the drug of choice in the 60’s and 70’s was very easily accessible and the artists music seem to imitate the effects of it. This became known as psychedelic rock; there lyrics usually seemed to revolve around something un-tangible like dreams or feelings. In this time you saw artist such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. The most memorable concert in rock’n’roll history was Woodstock in 1969. The atmosphere of the rock festival is a very good representation of the 60’s hippie culture. One of the biggest phenemenons of this decade were the Glam Metal, or hair bands as some called them. Motley Crue was one of the fronting bands of this movement and the first one to see mainstream success. These bands were more famous for there image than there music showing off sky high hair, make up, and eye catching clothing. This began to show in the mainstream population with teens and adults modeling after them. During the late 80’s and early 90’s glam bands and there style began to dissappear as alternative rock took the front. Alternative rock led the way through the 90’s and we can thank it for the styles and ideas of today. Rock’n’roll has paved the way for all the styles and sounds of the past 60 years. Almost all modern music genres splintered off this rebellion from the 50’s. If Mr. Alan Freed had not brought this sound to the mainstream society would not be what it is
