You can barely read a magazine or flip on the television without hearing about one of these new hip-hop/rock groups. Media such as Rolling Stone and MTV treat these bands like miraculously they created this "new" genre of music. Bands such as Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Sugar Ray are treated as creative geniuses when they are only doing things that have already been done before. Some of these new bands are very talented, but bands such Run DMC, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rage Against the Machine, blended the seemingly mismatched flavors of rap and rock with brilliant results long before any of these bands had ever even seen a turntable.
The earliest example of this mix of hip-hop and hard rock, came in 1985 with the release of Run DMC's "Rock Box".
As The Beatles, they developed a local following in Liverpool clubs, and their first recordings, "Love Me Do" (1962) and "Please Please Me" (1963), quickly made them Britain's top rock group. Their early music was influenced by the American rock singers Chuck BERRY and Elvis PRESLEY, but they infused a hackneyed musical form with freshness, vitality, and wit. [pic] The release of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in 1964 marked the beginning of the phenomenon known as "Beatlemania" in the United States. The Beatles' first U.S. tour aroused a universal mob adulation. Their concerts were scenes of mass worship, and their records sold in the millions.
The term “selling out” plays a big role in the dichotomy of underground and mainstream music across all genres and I will explain more about this term further on in the essay. Consumption and commerce interface with rebellion and expression in many ways according to Wahl (1999). Historically, hip hop didn’t gain much commercial success in the mainstream until the influential act ‘Run-DMC’ made their way onto the scene. Their album ‘Raising Hell’ in 1986 was the first hip hop product to go gold in the US. As Wahl (1999) points out, this was largely due to their hit single and cover of Aerosmith’s 1975 song, ‘Walk This Way’.
Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Elvis Pressley introduced this Genre. Classic Rock evolved in the United States and stemmed from a combination of various music genres. Those music genres that Rock stemmed from were blues, African-American genres, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music. Elvis Pressley who is an inspiring rock artist added his own twist to rock music by adding a fast paced upbeat sound and gave rock music life. Hip Hop was formed in the early 1970’s.
All the glitz, flash, and glamor that was becoming the blueprint for all rock bands in that decade was being replace with a more realer down to earth style that was more relatable with the current generation. That I need a ballet to sell albums theory was being burn, smash, and buried as Nirvana quickly rose to fame with a grungier in your face style. Nirvana was also was making music as a way to express their creativeness instead of a get rich quick lets wright a meaningless song scheme; which allowed them to stand out amongst a generation full of fakes. Merely a year into the 90’s, the epic songs of Nevermind became the lasting impression of rock during the decade. If it was for the unexpected death of Kurt, I truly believe Nirvana would still be a major force today in Rock and Roll.
It began as the backing for doo-wop and was then picked up by early rock-and-roll groups which brought the progression to center-stage. (AllMusic) Rock music featuring the 50’s Progression was the popular music up through the 1990’s, and while rock has faded in the past 10 years, the chord progression has maintained its utility. Many frustrated musicians wonder how one chord progression can remain dominant through six decades. According to music psychology experts, the progression is simple and easy for the brain to process. (Reif) For example, the C major 50’s Progression consists of C major, A minor, F major, and G major.
Pink Floyd is considered to be “Classic Rock,” but many people of their time-period saw them as the blues, jazz and sometimes even punk rock. Very few bands of the time actually gained the fan following that Pink Floyd did, as they produced “One Hit Wonders” that rocketed up the charts, but failed with regard to continuity and legacy. In these aspects, Pink Floyd has separated themselves from other rock bands. Pink Floyd is an extraordinary band that has endured several changes, has intriguing artistic abilities, and has incredible musical talents. To begin, Pink Floyd is an astonishing band because they have endured several changes.
There are two popular styles of music – rock and rap. These two kinds of music show freedom, independence, responsibility and view for the life of the teenager society. Rock and rap grabbed attention of the teenager audience for the next 3 reasons: preconditions of occurrence, style of playing music and new musical instruments and of course singers. Rock and rap are very different in age, but they are similar at the history of their occurrence. Rock appeared about 90 years ago, in the times of Great Depression.
Rock-and-roll bands that originated from England such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who were influential back then. In fact, according to Couey, they absolutely “dominated the 60’s”. Compared to now, rap has the same powerful impact on teenagers in the 21st century the same way rock influenced teenagers in the 60’s. At that time, The Beatles’ mania swept through the nation, and many people, male and female, became crazed fans. A lot of teenagers absolutely worshipped The Beatles as their idols, some even to the extent to comparing them as semi-gods.
From The Uk to California. Punk music is a chaotic, crazy, and hardcore kind of music. It was influenced by rock bands in the late 60s, such as The Rolling Stones, and Mc.Jagger. The unique vocalists in punk bands around the world are ones with accents and very scratchy voices like in the band “The Casualties”. They also have very few “good” instrumentalists but it still sounds good to who ever likes punk.
